Late Show host Stephen Colbert opened his show on Wednesday by comparing the ordeal surrounding James Comey being sacked by Donald Trump to Watergate.
Stephen Colbert has compared James Comey’s firing to Watergate and joked about the ‘rough drafts’ of the President’s letter to the FBI director notifying him he had been sacked.
The Late Show host opened his show on Wednesday by suggesting that Congress get Trump a special prosecutor to ‘thank him’ for firing Comey.
Colbert referenced one of Trump’s tweets in which the President said Comey had lost the confidence of almost everyone in Washington and that when things calmed down both Republicans and Democrats would be thanking him.
‘All right, how should we thank him?’ Colbert asked. ‘We should get him something special. How about a special prosecutor?’

Colbert had moments before played a montage of news outlets comparing Trump’s actions in firing Comey on Tuesday to that of Richard Nixon’s Saturday Night Massacre in 1973.
Nixon gave orders for special prosecutor Archibald Cox to be fired after he was appointed to investigate the Watergate scandal.
‘Yes, listen closely children, and you can hear the echoes of Watergate: “I am not a crook, -ook, -ook”, ‘ Colbert said as he impersonated Nixon.
He also referenced a ‘fun fact’ tweet from the Richard Nixon Library that pointed out Nixon had never fired his FBI director when he was president.
‘Hey, you know who else was shocked?’ Colbert asked.
‘Donald Trump. Because both sides of the aisle have been mad at Comey over the years, White House officials believed Comey’s firing would be a win-win.
‘Why would Trump think this is win-win?’ he asked. ‘Even his election was lose-win… Because he didn’ t get the majority vote.’
Colbert also showed some ‘rough drafts’ of Trump’s letter to Comey after he was sacked on Tuesday.
‘Dear Director Comey: I am terminating you because of the Russian Investigation. No hard feelings, Donald J. Trump, ‘ one letter read.
Another read: ‘I am terminating you just’ cause… who said anything about a Russian Investigation? Is that a thing? Hugs ‘n’ kisses!’
