Many of you might be wondering why the sequel to Doom 2016 isn’t called “Doom 2” and Bethesda has explained why Doom Eternal isn’t Doom 2.
Bethesda gave us the first look at Doom Eternal gameplay during Quakecon 2018 and the game looks amazing. However, many of you might be wondering why the sequel to Doom 2016 isn’t called “Doom 2” and Bethesda has explained why.
Speaking with IGN, executive producer Marty Stratton explained why Doom Eternal isn’t called Doom 2 despite it being a direct sequel to Doom 2016.
According to Stratton, the reason behind it the game being Doom Eternal is Doom 2016 as the problem stems from there saying “You hear us say it all the time, we call it Doom 2016, and the internet has called it Doom 2016”.
He added that Doom 2 would mean that it would be called “Doom 2: Year of Release Date” which is why they asked their marketing team to come with a subtitle for the game that has a “meaning”.
According to Creative director Hugo Martin, having the game titled Doom 2 would make searching for the game online “a giant pain in the butt, because you get all this [other] stuff”.
He further added that the inspiration behind naming it Doom Eternal was Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.
Speaking of the game, Doom Eternal will also allow players to invade other players’ game as a Demon. Not only that, players can team up as Demons to invade a player’s game and hunt the Doom slayer.
However, if you don’t want anyone to invade your game then you can just disable the game invasion and play the game solo.
Doom Eternal is a first-person action shooter in development at id Software for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. No release date has been announced for the game.
