Free Solo, which captured the Oscar for best documentary feature at the 2019 Academy Awards last weekend, is set to make its television debut Sunday, March 3, at 9 p.m. ET on the National Geographic Channel.
That means it’s also now easy to watch the amazing film streaming online. Even if you don’t have cable, you can watch a live stream of the National Geographic channel–and thus Free Solo –on your computer, phone or streaming device via one of the following cable-free, live-TV streaming services:
FuboTV
National Geographic is one of 95 live TV channels included in the main Fubo bundle.
You can sign up for a free 7-day trial of FuboTV right here, and you can then watch a live stream of Free Solo on your computer via the FuboTV website, or on your phone (Android and iPhone supported), tablet, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast or other supported device via the FuboTV app.
If you can’t watch live, FuboTV comes with 30 hours of Cloud DVR, as well as a “72-Hour Lookback” feature, which allows you to watch most shows and movies up to three days after they air even if you don’t record them.
Hulu With Live TV
In addition to a Netflix-like on-demand streaming library, Hulu also offers a bundle of 50-plus live TV channels, including National Geographic.
You can sign up for “Hulu with Live TV” right here, and you can then watch a live stream of Free Solo on your computer via the Hulu website, or on your phone (Android and iPhone supported), tablet, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Echo Show or other streaming device via the Hulu app.
If you can’t watch live, “Hulu with Live TV” comes with both its extensive on-demand library (which has most shows and movies available after they air) and 50 hours of Cloud DVR storage.
PlayStation Vue
PlayStation Vue — which doesn’t require an actual PlayStation console to sign up or watch — offers four different live-TV channel packages, all of which include National Geographic.
You can start a free five-day trial right here (select “Start Streaming” in the upper-right corner), and you can then watch a live stream of Free Solo on your computer via the PS Vue website, or on your phone (Android and iPhone supported), tablet, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, PlayStation (3 or 4), or other supported device via the PS Vue app.
If you can’t watch live, PlayStation Vue comes included with cloud DVR.
Note: Spoilers about Hannoid’s climb follow
Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi ( Meru, Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love, Incorruptible) and Jimmy Chin ( Meru, The Wildest Dream), Free Solo chronicles rock climber Alex Honnoid and his quest at a free solo climb of El Capitan, a near 3,000-foot vertical rock formation in Yosemite National Park.
Honnoid completed the climb, becoming the first person ever to top El Capitan without safety equipment. He accomplished the feat in just under four hours.
“This is the ‘moon landing’ of free soloing,” said Tommy Caldwell, who, along with partner Kevin Jorgeson, completed the first ever climb of El Capitan’s “Dawn Wall” in 2015.
Added Peter Croft, a free solo climber who completed a number of first ascents in the 1980’s,90’s and 00’s: “It was always the obvious next step. But after this, I really don’t see what’s next. This is the big classic jump.”
It was an unbelievable athletic feat, and the film is right on par in terms of being an extraordinary artistic feat.
Premiered in August 2018, Free Solo captured a number of different awards, including “People’s Choice Documentary” at the Toronto International Film Festival and “Best Cinematography” (among others) at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards. Then came the big one last weekend, as it took home “Best Documentary Feature” at the Oscars.
“We ran into Taylor Swift at the Fox party,” Chin said . “She said she loved the film, and we got to hear her take. People who are truly the greats understand Alex Honnold’s dedication and love and commitment.”
But considering the source material, it isn’t exactly easy to watch for everyone. Even Mikey Schaefer, an experienced climber who was part of the cinematography team, had some trouble with a certain part.
“I think I… had a unique ability to understand what he was going through,” he said . “And I don’t free-solo, but I have climbed that route and I was the only person on the crew that’s actually climbed that route — with a rope. But I’ve gone up there and I’ve grabbed those holds.
“When he was going through the boulder problem [a particularly tricky part of the ascent], I’m intimately aware of the size of that hold and the difficulty of that move, so I think for me especially it was just really hard (to watch).”
Free Solo has a critics’ approval score of 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes .

How Michael Jackson Accuser James Safechuck Was Motivated By His Family To Come Forward

Deceased pop star Michael Jackson was acquitted of child molestation charges back in 2005, but the conversation about these allegations isn’t over. On Mar. 3 and 4, HBO will air Leaving Neverland, a film documenting the allegations of two men who claim Jackson sexually abused them when they were children. One of the men in Leaving Neverland is James Safechuck, who first met Jackson on the set of a Pepsi commercial when he was 10.
In the documentary, Safechuck, along with fellow accuser Wade Robson, alleges years of sexual abuse from Jackson. Ahead of the release of the film, Safechuck told USA Today that he believes Jackson preyed on young boys who came from unstable families. «He has a way of sensing weakness in families,» he said. «He has a really good sense of people and can read people really well. First, I think he’s physically attracted to the kid, and then he reads the family and just knows how to work it.»
After appearing in the commercial with Jackson, Safechuck went on the Bad Tour with the singer and even appeared on stage doing the moonwalk during the Los Angeles stop, as reported by The Daily Beast.
Unlike Robson, who is a popular choreographer who has worked with Britney Spears and *NSYNC, Safechuck didn’t pursue a career in the public eye. The Daily Beast reported that when he filed a lawsuit alleging abuse against Jackson’s estate in 2014, he was working as a computer programmer, living in California, and was married with two children. Aside from what will be told in the documentary about his current life, there isn’t much else out there.
Safechuck’s 2014 lawsuit ended up being dismissed in 2017, reports USA Today, as did a similar one filed by Robson in 2013. (The dismissals did not rule on the credibility of the allegations, however.) In fact, it was Robson’s legal action that made Safechuck decide to see a psychiatrist and come forward with allegations himself, according to the New York Daily News.
Safechuck has a young son now, as does Robson. Safechuck told USA Today of his son reaching the age he was at the time the alleged abuse began, «I have been preparing with a therapist for it many years, seeing him at that age, because you’re really looking at a mirror of yourself. How am I going to deal with that? But I think I’m in as good a place as I can be to not be triggered by it, and enjoy my experience with him as its own experience.» He continued, «It can’t help but make you more protective and conscious of who they’re hanging out with, and what they’re doing. Hopefully this film will do that for other people.»
Safechuck had been planning to keep his claims a secret, but sees how Jackson’s death could have had an effect on him changing his mind. He told CBS in a recent interview (via The Hollywood Reporter), «Would I have taken this to my grave? I certainly planned on doing that. I had no expectations of ever telling anyone. If he was still alive, maybe I would have taken it to my grave.»
Leaving Neverland has already drawn much criticism from Jackson fans, and also from some members of his family. Three of Jackson’s brothers have spoken out against the film, and the singer’s estate has also sued HBO for $100 million, claiming the film breaches a non-disparagement clause in a 1992 contract, according to the BBC. HBO’s response statement reads, «Despite the desperate lengths taken to undermine the film, our plans remain unchanged.»
As viewers watch and stream the documentary, the discussion surrounding Jackson, Safechuck, Robson, and the way Jackson is remembered is not going to die down any time soon.

YouTube Suspends Comments on Videos of Kids

0

YouTube said Thursday it will turn off comments on nearly all videos featuring kids — potentially affecting millions of posts on the site.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — YouTube said Thursday it will turn off comments on nearly all videos featuring kids — potentially affecting millions of posts on the site — after reports last week that pedophiles were leaving inappropriate comments on innocuous videos of children.
The change comes as YouTube grapples with moderating content across its platform as concerns about hate speech, violence and conspiracy theories continue to plague it. It will take YouTube several months to disable comments on all videos featuring minors, the company said. It already started the process last week when it turned off comments from tens of millions of videos.
Advertisers including Nestle, AT&T and Fortnite-maker Epic Games pulled ads from YouTube last week after the inappropriate comments about children were unearthed by a popular YouTuber and media reports. At least one company, Nestle, was satisfied with YouTube’s response and reinstated ads late last week.
A small number of channels which have videos featuring kids will be allowed to keep comments turned on. But they must be known to YouTube and must actively monitor the comments beyond the standard monitoring tools YouTube provides. Turning off comments on such a large number of videos seems an “extreme reaction,” said eMarketer analyst Paul Verna. But the issue involves the safety of children, so it makes sense YouTube would want to act quickly, he said.
Comments aren’t the main focus of the video-publishing site, but turning them off will likely diminish the experience for many users and video creators, he said. YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki acknowledged the concerns Thursday, tweeting, “Nothing is more important to us than ensuring the safety of young people on the platform.”
The company said it has also released an updated version of its automated moderating system that it expects will identify and delete two times as many inappropriate comments.
YouTube, like Facebook, Twitter and other sites that allow user publishing, have faced increasing calls to monitor what appears on their sites and get rid of unsuitable content. The companies all say they have taken action to protect users. But issues keep popping up. Concerns about YouTube comments weren’t even a top priority for advertisers and viewers a couple weeks ago, Verna said.
“It just makes you wonder, what’s the next thing that going to happen?”

Boeings, bombers and biplanes at the Seattle Museum of Flight

0

Walk through a 747, a 787, a Concorde and more at one of the largest air museums in the world.
Seattle might not spring to mind when you think of important locations in the history of aviation. Kitty Hawk probably, Paris maybe, Edwards Air Force Base for sure. But when it comes to the history of airplanes themselves, Seattle belongs on the list for one big reason: Boeing.
Fitting, then, that the massive Museum of Flight is not only located adjacent to Boeing Field, right down the road from one of the company’s massive factories, but also features several historically important Boeing aircraft. It’s not just a Boeing museum, though. Through its multiple hangars and galleries, there are stunning examples of aircraft from the entire history of aviation. Even better, you can go inside several of these meticulously maintained aircraft.
Want to stand underneath the only surviving M-21 variant of the A-12 spyplane, the predecessor to the SR-71 Blackbird? How about rare and restored WWI and WWII aircraft like the Pfalz D. XII and Yakovlev Yak-9? You can even walk through the first 747, the first 727, one of the 787 prototypes, the first jet-powered Air Force One and more.
Here’s a look inside.
No matter where you put it, an A-12 (top of the page) just dominates the space it’s in. Visually similar to the even more advanced SR-71, the model still looks futuristic now nearly 60 years after its first flight. This is one is even rarer, the M-21 variant that was built to carry an autonomous drone, which is currently sitting on top.
Oh, right, I’m in a museum. The Museum of Flight is just south of Seattle, and I arrive on a cold February day and the museum is packed. There’s an event happening on the floor below the M-21: a model faire with tiny versions of many of the aircraft you can see in this very space. That space is aptly called the Great Gallery, and it has floor-to-high-ceiling windows on two sides, letting in a lot of light. Aircraft sit on the floor and hang from above, creating a certain energy that most air museums lack. There’s an impressive mix of aircraft here, from WWI biplanes to Cold War jets, to the aforementioned M-21.
Though there’s no specific order you need to visit the museum’s many spaces in, I follow the route recommended to me at the ticket desk. From the Great Gallery I head down to the Red Barn, an odd sort of annex with wood floors and walls. It’s a mockup of what the first Boeing manufacturing plant would have looked like, with era-appropriate tools and machinery. The structure itself is original, but it was moved here in the 1970s. As mentioned before, the Museum of Flight isn’t a Boeing museum per se, but its location certainly lends itself to having a slight Boeing focus.
There are no planes in the Red Barn, and that’s what I’m here to see, so I head down the corridor to the Personal Courage Wing. The first floor is all about WWII aircraft, and there’s a great mix of expected and unexpected planes. A perfectly preserved P-51, P-47, P-40 and P-38 sit on the floor or hang from the ceiling, along with a Spitfire, Bf 109 and several others. The Yak-9 is exceptionally rare, and this is the only one in North America.
Upstairs goes back in time a few decades to WWI. Fabric-covered, wood-framed biplanes and triplanes are a mix of reproductions, restorations and replicas.
Outside and across a covered bridge are the Space Gallery and huge outdoor-but-covered Aviation Pavilion. The Space Gallery has a Space Shuttle trainer, and for an extra fee you can get a tour inside. (Due to time constraints, I wasn’t able to take the tour during my visit, but I was able to walk through the cargo bay.)
The Aviation Pavilion is probably the best part of the museum. Not only are there some jumbo jets here, including the original 747, but you can go inside most of the aircraft. This includes the first jet-powered Air Force One from the late ’50s, a 727 and even the ultramodern 787. There’s even a Concorde.
I’ve visited a lot of air museums all over the world, and while size isn’t always an indication of quality, how many aircraft you can go inside is. To me, at least. The Museum of Flight has a great combination of variety, rarity and airplane accessibility. The $25 fee for adults is on the high end for an air museum, but I don’t think you’ll feel like you didn’t get your money’s worth. The museum is open every day 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Check out the gallery above for even more photos of what it looks like inside.
