A new trailer drops for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming sci-fi film Ready Player One that reveals an Overwatch character makes an appearance in the movie.
There’s no denying the popularity of Blizzard’s Overwatch. The game has managed to sell millions of units, has raked in billions of dollars, and has topped 35 million players worldwide since launch. Considering this, it’s not surprising that Hollywood has its eye on the game, and while an official Overwatch film adaptation isn’t in the works just yet, one of the game’s most popular characters will be making her big screen debut on March 30,2018 in Ready Player One.
Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, based on the novel of the same name, is about a boy exploring a virtual reality world called the OASIS in search of an easter egg that will make him rich. Along the way, the boy will cross paths with a number of pop culture characters, including the Iron Giant, various superheroes, Freddy Krueger, and some video game characters as well. Besides the previously revealed Duke Nukem, the film’s latest trailer confirms that Overwatch‘s Tracer will appear in the movie.
The latest trailer for Ready Player One can be seen below. Tracer is a bit hard to pick out, but she appears in the large group of characters running at about the 1:59 mark. Interestingly, she is running alongside Street Fighter‘s Chun-Li in the clip.
It makes sense that Tracer was chosen to represent Overwatch in the Ready Player One film. She is easily the most recognizable character on the roster, appearing front and center on the game’s box art and featured in much of its merchandise. She’s appeared in Overwatch comic books, animated shorts, and even has her own Nendoroid figure.
Tracer’s also notable for the controversy that surrounded her before the game’s launch. As some may recall, Tracer once had a victory pose that was accused of being too sexual in nature. Blizzard ultimately decided to scrap the pose before the game’s official launch, which resulted in backlash of its own, as other fans criticized the company for censoring itself.
The controversy surrounding Tracer’s victory pose hasn’t stopped her from becoming one of Overwatch‘s most popular characters. Including her in Ready Player One may be enough to convince Overwatch fans the world over to see the movie in theaters, though it remains to be seen if she will play a role beyond the brief cameo teased in the film’s latest trailer.
Overwatch is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
