The store has 44 associates and opened in 1992.
Macy’s is closing its location in the Fort Gratiot Birchwood Mall.
The closure is part of the 100 planned store closures announced in August 2016, according to the company.
„Macy’s shared this information with store associates today, January 3,2018, because they are important to our organization and we wanted to make sure they heard about this change from the company,“ Emily Workman, Macy’s spokeswoman said in an email. „Regular, non-seasonal employees who we are unable to place will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources.
„While closing a store is always a difficult decision because of the impact on our customers, our associates and the community, Macy’s is delighted to have served this community over the years. We deeply appreciate the loyalty of our customers and associates, and we look forward to continuing to serve our Michigan customers at our locations statewide, and at macys.com and on the Macy’s app.“
The closing date will be sometime in the month of March, she said. The store has 44 associates and opened in 1992.
Macy’s owns the building. Workman said there is no announcement as to the future of the structure.
„We’ll be sad to see them go, they have been a strong anchor to Birchwood Mall since they opened… We hope we can maybe make some headway with the mall and see how they’re going to re-purpose themselves, we know that’s kind of a trend that’s going around,“ said Kristy Jones, Fort Gratiot community development coordinator.
Calls to the mall were referred to Amy Jurecki, the general manager of Birchwood and Southland malls. She did not immediately return a phone call.
Sears and Sears Auto Center closed at the mall in March 2016. Jones said as far as she knows that anchor store in the mall remains vacant.
The remaining anchor stores at the mall are Carson’s, Target and JCPenney.
