A Jay County teenager has died of injuries suffered in the crash of an all-terrain vehicle.
PORTLAND, Ind. – A Jay County teenager has died of injuries suffered in the crash of an all-terrain vehicle.
According to an accident report, Jonas J. Hilty, 16, was driving a 2017 Polaris Ranger northbound on Jay County Road 550-W, south of County Road 500-N, about 6 p.m. Saturday when he lost control of the ATV.
A witness told state conservation officers that the ATV was “sliding back and forth on the road” before the vehicle left the road and rolled onto its side in a ditch.
Hilty – who was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report – got out of the vehicle, but then collapsed, authorities said. He suffered injuries to his abdomen.
The teen was flown by medical helicopter to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where he died on Sunday, about 12 hours after the accident.
Funeral services are scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday at the Hilty family residence, at 4171 N. Jay County Road 550-W.
Burial will follow in the Pennville Amish Cemetery.
