LG took the scrapped flagship smartphone to MWC and it has an iPhone X-style notch – LG G7 codenamed Neo spotted at MWC, might be the scrapped flagship
At MWC 2018, LG was expected to launch its flagship G7 smartphone but the Korean company has reportedly scrapped that device to focus on a device called Judy instead. LG’s next flagship codenamed Judy is expected to arrive sometime in June but the cancelled device might have been spotted at LG’s MWC booth.
Israeli publication Ynet published video of a purported device clearly marked as G7 and said to be codenamed Neo. The phone seems to be another Android smartphone with an iPhone-like notch. At MWC 2018, Asus announced its ZenFone 5 series with a notch that it even claimed to be smaller than the one found on iPhone X. The OnePlus 6, the next flagship from the Chinese company, is also expected to embrace the notch.
Ynet confirms that the spied device features a dual 16-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel front camera, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset and a 3,000mAh battery. It would have launched in two variants: a 4GB RAM model with 64GB storage and a 6GB RAM variant with 128GB of storage.
Evan Blass who first reported LG’s plan to cancel the existing device and focus on Judy instead, tweeted that the LG G7 (Neo) showcased at MWC might be the scrapped device. According to reports, LG decided to drop the in-development device after its CEO said that there are not enough technology developments worthy of it being pushed as a flagship.
LG is also said to be dropping the G-series branding altogether and Judy might have a different name. However, if LG pushed Judy with a notch and calls it as innovation then it is most likely not going to see any success. Apple justifies the notch on the iPhone X with Face ID implementation and consumers will embrace the notch only when there is accompanying tech.
LG has little presence in the smartphone industry right now and its products have failed to stay relevant. The company needs to find the lost mojo in order to succeed in the competitive smartphone space.
