Can you play as a female protagonist in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?
Yes. You can. It’s cool, isn’t it?
You’d be forgiven for not realising, though. Almost all of the marketing for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla shows Eivor, the game’s protagonist, as a big beardy bloke Viking.
But you can also choose to play as female Eivor, as confirmed by Ubisoft and this photo of the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla collector’s edition:
Also, this screenshot includes the female version of protagonist Eivor, but it’s hard to tell because she’s hidden behind a massive shield and pauldron:
(The only reason we know that’s female Eivor is that the filename of the image we downloaded from the Ubisoft press pack is ‘ACV_screen_Announce_Iconic England_Female_Eivor’.)
And believe it or not, that’s also female Eivor in the header image at the top of its article, but it’s hard to tell unless you zoom in a bit:
(The PR shot filename is a clue here, too. This one’s called ‘ACV_screen_Announce_Drakkar_Female_Eivor’.)
You’d almost think that Ubisoft was playing down the female protagonist option in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, perhaps because of some bad elements in the audience?

Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Crashlands are free until next Thursday on the Epic Games Store.
In the past decade, Frictional Games has put out one game every five years. The result? Two modern horror classics: 2010’s Amnesia: The Dark Descent and 2015’s Soma. If you haven’t yet experienced the terrors of A:TD, you’re in luck. It’s free right now, in anticipation of the release of Amnesia: Rebirth later this year.
Though Frictional published The Chinese Room’s Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Rebirth will be the first Frictional-developed game in the Amnesia series since 2010.
If horror isn’t your thing, however, Epic is also offering the colourful ARPG Crashlands. This game includes crafting. Perhaps, it should have been called Craftlands!*
*I have not played this game and have skimmed its Epic store page, so this was the best joke I could come up with. My apologies. (You’re forgiven. Ed.)
If you don’t already have an Epic account, you’ll need to create one to claim your games here. To do that, you’ll need an email address, password and a credit card on file.
Now that Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Crashlands are free, Epic has unveiled its next pair of freebies. Next Thursday, Death Coming and one other as yet unannounced game will be up for grabs.
