Trump to Israel: Settlements ‘may not help’ achieve peace in the Middle East

NewsHubPresident Trump on Thursday warned Israel that constructing new settlements “may not be helpful” to Middle East peace efforts despite–before taking office– criticizing the Obama administration for not vetoing a United Nations Security Council measure condemning settlements.
The Washington Post reported that the Trump administration also “pulled back somewhat” on its pledge to move the U. S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
David Halperin, the executive director of the Israel Policy Forum, told the paper that Trump’s move serves as a caution to Netanyahu.
“It’s a warning sign to the Israeli right that their celebration (of the new administration) may be premature,” he said.
The New York Times called Trump’s appeal to Israel a “startling shift. ” The Jerusalem Post called the statement “surprising. ”
An unnamed administration official told The Jerusalem Post that the White House was not consulted on Israel’s “unprecedented” announcement of 5,500 new settlement units.
Up until this point, the Trump administration was perceived to be sympathetic to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s settlements.
“While we don’t believe the existence of settlements is an impediment to peace, the construction of new settlements or the expansion of existing settlements beyond their current borders may not be helpful in achieving that goal,” the White House said in a statement.
The White House said the president would discuss the issue with Netanyahu when the two meet in Washington on Feb. 15.
The U. S. statement came hours after Netanyahu vowed to establish the first new West Bank settlement in over two decades “as soon as possible,” promising to make up for the court-ordered demolition of an illegal settler outpost. It was his latest step to expand Israeli settlement construction in the wake of Trump’s inauguration.
Newly sworn-in Secretary of State Rex Tillerson spoke by phone Thursday with Netanyahu.
The prime minister’s vow to establish new West Bank settlements came as Israeli security forces were completing the evacuation of Amona, where they broke into a synagogue to remove dozens of Israeli protesters who had barricaded themselves inside.
According to the Israeli anti-settlement watchdog Peace Now, Israel has not officially broken ground on a new settlement since 1992.
Since that time, however, it has greatly expanded its existing settlements and allowed dozens of unauthorized outposts to sprout up, in some cases subsequently legalizing them. In all, some 400,000 Israelis now live in West Bank settlements, in addition to 200,000 others living in east Jerusalem.
The Palestinians claim both areas, captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war, as parts of a future independent state. The international community has opposed the settlements, built on occupied lands sought by the Palestinians, as obstacles to peace.
Britain and Germany, close Israeli allies, as well as the European Union criticized Netanyahu’s approval this week of 3,000 new settlement homes in the West Bank.
“This spike in settlement activity undermines trust and makes a two-state solution — with an Israel that is safe from terrorism and a Palestinian state that is viable and sovereign — much harder to achieve,” said Britain’s minister for the Middle East, Tobias Ellwood.
Amona has emerged as a symbol of settler defiance. On Thursday, Israeli police completed the evacuation of the wind-swept community, where hundreds of Jewish activists joined residents in resisting the pullout.
Police began the evacuation Wednesday, but dozens of activists remained holed up in the synagogue. Police initially said 200 had barricaded themselves inside but later revised the number to about 100.
On Thursday, several hundred Israeli forces surrounded the building, and officers wearing goggles and wielding plastic shields broke through the doors and sprayed water to push back defiant protesters.
“The officers faced especially tough and violent resistance,” police said in a statement. Protesters sprayed fire extinguishers at police and threw rocks, paint bottles and wooden planks, police said.

The vulnerability was disclosed Thursday when the security researcher who found it posted a proof-of-concept exploit for it on GitHub. There was concern initially that the flaw might also allow for arbitrary code execution and not just denial-of-service, which would have made it critical.
The CERT Coordination Center (CERT/CC) at Carnegie Mellon University at first mentioned arbitrary code execution as a possibility in an advisory released Thursday. However, the organization has since removed that wording from the document and downgraded the flaw’s severity score from 10 (critical) to 7.8 (high).
Attackers can exploit the vulnerability by tricking Windows systems to connect to malicious SMB servers that send specially crafted responses. Successful exploitation will result in a crash in the mrxsmb20.sys driver, which will trigger a so-called Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).
There are a number of techniques to force computers to open SMB connections and some require little or no user interaction, CERT/CC warned. The organization confirmed the exploit on Windows 10 and Windows 8.1, as well as Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
“Windows is the only platform with a customer commitment to investigate reported security issues, and proactively update impacted devices as soon as possible,” a Microsoft representative said via email. “Our standard policy is that on issues of low risk, we remediate that risk via our current Update Tuesday schedule. “
Update or Patch Tuesday is the day when Microsoft typically releases security updates for its products. This occurs on the second Tuesday of every month and the next one is scheduled for February 14.
The company sometimes breaks out of this regular patch cycle to release updates for critical and actively exploited vulnerabilities, but this won’t likely happen in this case, especially now that the flaw’s severity has been decreased and there’s apparently no threat of remote code execution.

Für Nestlé-Verwaltungsratspräsident Peter Brabeck-Letmathe ist der neue US-Präsident nicht der Sargnagel der Globalisierung: „Trump ist nicht gegen die Globalisierung. Er ist nur gegen Freihandelsabkommen, die sein Vorgänger unterschrieben hat und wo er der Meinung ist, dass die USA benachteiligt werde.“ Er habe nie gehört, dass Trump gesagt hätte, er wolle andere Nationen schwächen, sagte der gebürtige Österreicher bei einer Diskussionsveranstaltung in der Industriellenvereinigung. „Trump ist nicht das Ende der Globalisierung. Dazu ist die Welt viel zu sehr vernetzt.“
Die eigentliche Gefahr sieht Brabeck-Letmathe durch Populisten nahen. Diese versprechen, die ´gute alte Zeit´ zurückzubringen. Und die Älteren, die diese Zeit erlebt haben, glauben das. Das sehe man am Brexit. Die Jungen kämpfen dagegen. Die Älteren waren dafür. „Die Welt leidet unter ihrer Komplexität. Dazu kommt eine Erosion der Glaubwürdigkeit des Leaderships. Man glaubt uns nicht, dass wir Kapital und Ressourcen gerecht verteilen können. Die schleichenden Entdemokratisierung ist für mich die größte Gefahr der westlichen Welt.“
Auch IV-Präsident Georg Kapsch glaubt nicht, dass die Globalisierung in den letzten Zügen liegt. „Ich denke nicht, dass die Globalisierung am Ende ist, denn die Menschen haben erkannt, dass Protektionismus niemals zur Erhöhung des Wohlstandes geführt hat.“ Der Kernpunkt sei, dass die Menschen nicht auf der Strecke bleiben dürfen. Die Digitalisierung werde viele neue Arbeitsplätze schaffen, viel mehr als dadurch verloren gehen.
Auch Detlef Günther von der ETH Zürich schloss sich seinen Mitdiskutanten an. glaubt ebenfalls nicht an das Ende der Globalisierung. „Die Wissenschaft war schon immer global. Daher haben wir auch keine Angst davor. Wir glauben, dass die Talente zu uns finden werden, denn wir brauchen die besten Leute“, so der Uni-Professor.

NewsHubUS-Präsident Donald Trump hat sich erneut mit Arnold Schwarzenegger angelegt und dafür gleich eine Retourkutsche kassiert. Bei einer Rede in Washington erinnerte sich Trump am Donnerstag an seine Zeit als Star der Reality-Show “Celebrity Apprentice” und belächelte seinen dortigen Nachfolger Schwarzenegger wegen dessen schwächeren Einschaltquoten. Der stellte daraufhin ein Video online, in dem er Trump vorschlug, doch einfach die Jobs zu tauschen, damit alle wieder friedlich schlafen könnten.
“Als ich für die Präsidentenwahl angetreten bin, musste ich die Show verlassen”, sagte Trump beim National Prayer Breakfast, einem jährlichen Treffen von Prominenten aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Kultur. “Sie verpflichteten einen großen, großen Kinostar, Arnold Schwarzenegger, um mich zu ersetzen. Und wir wissen, was dabei rauskam. Die Quoten gingen in den Keller. Es war ein völliges Desaster. ”
Schwarzenegger sagte in dem Video auf seinem Twitter-Account daraufhin: “Übernehmen Sie doch das Fernsehen, wenn Sie so ein Quotenexperte sind. Und ich übernehme Ihren Job und dann können die Leute endlich wieder friedlich schlafen. Hmm? ”
In der letzten Staffel mit Trump hatte “Celebrity Apprentice” 2015 7,6 Millionen Zuschauer. Bei Schwarzeneggers Premiere im Januar waren es fünf Millionen und in der Woche darauf nur noch 3,9 Millionen. Trump wird bei der Show immer noch als Produzent geführt, weshalb er auch Interesse an hohen Einschaltquoten haben dürfte.
Schwarzenegger war republikanischer Gouverneur von Kalifornien. Mehrfach sagte er in Interviews, dass er sich auch eine Kandidatur für das höchste Staatsamt in den USA vorstellen könnte, wenn die Verfassung das zuließe. Weil er nicht dort, sondern in Österreich geboren ist, darf er aber nicht Präsident werden. Wegen eines Besuches im Vatikan war spekuliert worden, ob Schwarzenegger neuer US-Gesandter am heiligen Stuhl werden würde.

American Football: Spektakel der Superlative – 51. Super Bowl in Houston

NewsHubHouston (dpa) – Der Super Bowl – das größte Spektakel amerikanischer Kultur. An diesem Sonntag (Ortszeit) treffen in Houston die New England Patriots auf die Atlanta Falcons, und es wird eine Show der Superlative.
Weltweit werden mehrere hundert Millionen Zuschauer dem Duell zusehen. Die Patriots haben die Chance, die Trophäe zum fünften Mal zu holen, für die Falcons wäre es der erste Sieg.
Allein in den USA waren im vergangenen Jahr rund 112 Millionen Zuschauer vor dem Fernseher, so still wie am Abend des Super Bowl steht das Land sonst nur an Thanksgiving. Angesichts der wachsenden Popularität in Deutschland hofft Sat.1 für die Nacht zum Montag darauf, die Zuschauermarke von zwei Millionen zu knacken – vergangenes Jahr waren es 1,81.
New Englands Quarterback Tom Brady (39) gilt vielen als der beste aller Spielmacher überhaupt. Sein Name steht schon in den Geschichtsbüchern, jetzt will er ihn vergolden. Sein Gegenüber aber, “Matty Ice” Ryan (31), hat eine fantastische Saison hinter sich und beste Chancen auf den Titel des wertvollsten Spielers. Die Patriots sind leichter Favorit. Aber es könnte ein sehr enges Spiel werden, in dem es dann besonders auf die Kicker wie Stephen Gostkowski von den Patriots ankommt.
Wie so vieles in den USA, hat 2017 auch der Super Bowl eine politische Komponente. Die drei Säulen der Patriots haben enge Bande zu Donald Trump, dem frisch gewählten und hoch umstrittenen US-Präsidenten. Brady, Coach Bill Belichick und Patriots-Eigner Robert Kraft sind Freunde Trumps, haben damit viel Kritik auf sich gezogen. Brady unterstützte Trump sogar im Wahlkampf. Die drei versuchten, das Thema aus der Phase vor dem Finale herauszuhalten – angesichts Trumps umstrittener Maßnahmen mit mäßigem Erfolg.
Die Patriots sind eine Erfolgsmaschine, sie werden geliebt oder gehasst. Coach Belichick gilt als sportliches Genie und ist einer der erfolgreichsten Trainer überhaupt. Mit einem Erfolg am Sonntag hätte der Perfektionist mit der Kapuze als erster NFL-Trainer fünfmal den Super Bowl gewonnen. Dass die Seriengewinner nun auch noch eine solche Nähe zur Macht pflegen, kam bei vielen nicht gut an.
Schon zum neunten Mal sind die Patriots in einem NFL-Finale, die Falcons hatten ihr erstes Endspiel 1999 deutlich gegen die Denver Broncos verloren. In den Kampf gegen die Patriots gehen sie gleichwohl voller Selbstbewusstsein: “Dieses Team hat den richtigen Mix”, sagt Ryan. Im Halbfinale hatte Ryans Team die Green Bay Packers klar geschlagen (44:21), die Patriots besiegten die Pittsburg Steelers (36:17).
Die Spieler des Siegerteams bekommen eine Prämie von etwa 100 000 Dollar, die Verlierer jeweils 50 000 – für die millionenschweren Stars des knallharten Rasenschachs allerdings fast Peanuts.
Die NFL ist eine gewaltige, milliardenschwere Unterhaltungsmaschine. Ihre Einnahmen betrugen im vergangenen Jahr rund 13 Milliarden Dollar. Dem Spiel am Sonntag vor Ort zuzusehen, ist nichts für arme Leute: Das günstigste Ticket kostet etwa 2000 Dollar. Wer am Spielfeldrand auf Höhe der Mittellinie sitzen will, wird bis zu 18 000 Dollar los.
Der einzige Deutsche, der im Finale auf dem Feld dabei sein könnte, fehlt. Sebastian Vollmer, der 2015 den Super-Bowl mit den Patriots gewann, hat wegen einer Hüftverletzung diese Saison noch gar nicht gespielt.
Traditionell ist die Halbzeitshow des Super Bowl ein Ereignis für sich. Halb Amerika wird zuschauen, wenn Lady Gaga ihre Show liefert – “ich plane das, seit ich vier bin”, sagt sie im Werbespot. Wagt sie beim größten Fernsehereignis des Jahres – ein 30-Sekunden-Spot kostet rund fünf Millionen Dollar – ein politisches Statement gegen Trump?
In Houston deutete sie das zumindest an: Ihre Botschaft werde eine der Liebe sein, der Freundlichkeit und der Begeisterung, sagte sie vor Medien. Nach einem Stoßgebet für den US-Präsidenten klingt das nicht. Welche Songs sie singen und wie oft sie das Kostüm wechseln wird, wollte sie noch nicht verraten.
Kein Geheimnis sind dagegen die unglaublichen Mengen, die zum Super Bowl verzehrt werden. USA-weit werden etwa 120 Millionen Liter Bier getrunken, dazu kommen angeblich mehrere hundert Millionen Chicken Wings und – wegen der Guacamole – viele Tonnen Avocados. Obendrauf noch mehr als 13 000 Tonnen Chips. Fast-Food-Ketten stellen befristet für das Wochenende Tausende neue Mitarbeiter ein.

Der 41-Jährige hatte zum Auftakt des Events in den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten am Donnerstag eine extrem schwache Auftaktrunde gespielt und 77 Schläge für die 18 Löcher benötigt. Er lag damit fast ganz am Ende des Teilnehmerfeldes. Der Österreicher Bernd Wiesberger fand sich vor der zweiten Runde auf Rang 76 wieder.
Für Woods war es erst die dritte Turnierteilnahme überhaupt nach einer langen Verletzungspause. Wegen großer Rückenprobleme hatte der ehemalige Weltranglisten-Erste zwischen August 2015 und Dezember 2016 überhaupt kein einziges Turnier bestreiten können.

US wrestlers banned from Iran world cup in response to Trump policy

NewsHubIran has banned US wrestlers from participating in this month’s Freestyle World Cup competition in response to Donald Trump’s executive order forbidding visas for Iranians, according to a news agency.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi was quoted by the official IRNA agency as saying a special committee reviewed the case and “eventually the visit by the US freestyle wrestling team was opposed”.
The decision marks the first action taken by Iran in response to US President Mr Trump’s executive order banning visas for seven Muslim countries.
Earlier this week, Iran said it would take retaliatory action.
Mr Ghasemi said the policy of the new US administration left Iran no other choice but to ban the wrestlers.
The competition in the western Iranian city of Kermanshah is scheduled for February 16 and 17.
USA Wrestling had said it would send a team to the Freestyle World Cup, one of the most prestigious competitions in international wrestling.
US freestyle wrestlers have competed in Iran since the 1998 Takhti Cup in Tehran following an absence of nearly 20 years.
Since then, Americans have attended Iran-hosted wrestling competitions 15 times.
Iranians, for their part, have made 16 visits to the US as guests of USA Wrestling since the 1990s.
The American athletes were warmly welcomed by Iranians and sport centres were packed as they appeared on the mats to compete.
Wrestling is extremely popular in Iran and is rooted in an ancient practice of combining the sport with other physical education and meditation.

Conway cites 'Bowling Green massacre' that never happened to defend travel ban

NewsHubDuring a Thursday interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, defended President Trump’s travel ban related to seven majority-Muslim countries. At one point, Conway made a reference to two Iraqi refugees whom she described as the masterminds behind “the Bowling Green Massacre. ”
“Most people don’t know that because it didn’t get covered,” Conway said.
The Bowling Green Massacre didn’t get covered because it didn’t happen. There has never been a terrorist attack in Bowling Green, Kentucky, carried out by Iraqi refugees or anyone else.
Conway was likely referring to two Iraqi citizens living in Bowling Green who were arrested in 2011 and eventually sentenced to federal prison for attempting to send weapons and money to al-Qaida in Iraq for the purpose of killing U. S. soldiers, according to a news release from the Department of Justice .
Friday morning, Conway acknowledged her confusion with a tweet:
As a result of the Bowling Green investigation, Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, 25, was sentenced to life in federal prison. Waad Ramadan Alwan was sentenced to 31 to 40 years in federal prison, followed by a life term of supervised release. Both men pleaded guilty to federal terrorism charges.
Both men admitted having taken part in attacks against U. S. troops in Iraq, not in Bowling Green.
Here’s what the Justice Department said in Jan. 29, 2013, news release:
“Hammadi and Alwan both admitted, in FBI interviews that followed waiver of their Miranda rights, to participation in the purported material support operations in Kentucky, and both provided the FBI details of their prior involvement in insurgent activities while living in Iraq. Both men believed their activities in Kentucky were supporting AQI. Alwan admitted participating in IED attacks against U. S. soldiers in Iraq, and Hammadi admitted to participating in 10 to 11 IED attacks as well as shooting at a U. S. soldier in an observation tower.
“Court documents filed in this case reveal that the Bowling Green office of the FBI’s Louisville Division initiated an investigation of Alwan in which they used a confidential human source (CHS). The CHS met with Alwan and recorded their meetings and conversations beginning in August 2010. The CHS represented to Alwan that he was working with a group to ship money and weapons to Mujahadeen in Iraq. From September 2010 through May 2011, Alwan participated in ten separate operations to send weapons and money that he believed were destined for terrorists in Iraq. Between October 2010 and January 2011, Alwan drew diagrams of multiple types of IEDs and instructed the CHS how to make them. In January 2011, Alwan recruited Hammadi, a fellow Iraqi national living in Bowling Green, to assist in these material support operations. Beginning in January 2011 and continuing until his arrest in late May 2011, Hammadi participated with Alwan in helping load money and weapons that he believed were destined for terrorists in Iraq.”
Conway reiterated claims from Trump that his refugee policy is similar to “what President Obama did in 2011 when he banned visas for refugees from Iraq for six months. ” Conway said it was “brand new information” to people that Obama enacted a “six-month ban on the Iraqi refugee program. ” Breitbart also reported earlier this week that “Obama suspended Iraq refugee program for six months over terrorism fears in 2011. ”
As The Washington Post reported, this was not the case. Obama administration officials told The Post that there was never a point when Iraqi resettlement was stopped or banned. In the aftermath of the arrests of the two Iraqis living in Kentucky, the Obama administration imposed more extensive background checks on Iraqi refugees, and the new screening procedures created a dramatic slowdown in visa approvals.
State Department records show there was a significant drop in refugee arrivals from Iraq in 2011, The Post’s Glenn Kessler reported. There were 18,251 in 2010, 6,339 in 2011 and 16,369 in 2012. One news report said the “pace of visa approvals having slowed to a crawl,” indicating some were still being approved.
Conway’s interview was by no means the first time the arrests of the two Iraqis in Bowling Green have been politicized as support for blocking refugees from reaching the United States. In December 2015, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., released a dramatic campaign video ad featuring images and video footage of the two Iraqi nationals, while criticizing then-presidential rivals Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. In the 90-second-long ad, the faces of Waad Ramadan Alwan and Mohanad Shareef Hammadi are featured with pounding, dismal music, establishing that the men were “welcomed into America, given public housing, and public assistance — as refugees. ”
After Conway’s comments, “Bowling Green Massacre” was the number-one topic trending on Twitter, and Conway’s interview prompted many to share memories of where they were “when the Bowling Green Massacre didn’t happen. “
