Democrats Don't Think Trumpcare Is Dead

0

There could still be a vote soon on Senate GOP legislation to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, Democrats warned on Tuesday.
Republicans backed off a plan to vote this week on legislation rolling back much of President Obama’s signature healthcare law, the Affordable Care Act. But Democrats don’ t think this is the end of Trumpcare.
“It’s far from over. McConnell said he’s going to come back to it soon, ” Democratic Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois said in an interview at the Capitol. “We’ re not taking anything for granted.”
Senate Republicans Put Off Health-Care Vote
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Tuesday afternoon that the Senate would “not be on the bill this week, ” as Republican Senators continue “discussions within our conference on the differences that we have.” But he added that “we’ re still working toward getting at least 50 people in a comfortable place.” McConnell only needs 50 Republican senators to pass the legislation—assuming Vice President Pence breaks a tie —because Republicans are using a process known as budget reconciliation to evade a Democratic filibuster.
A number of Republican senators, however, have balked at the bill. Some conservative have argued it does not go far enough in repealing Obamacare, while moderates have expressed concern that it would too far in cutting Medicaid, the program that provides health insurance for low-income Americans. The Congressional Budget Office concluded on Monday that the Senate bill would leave 22 million Americans without insurance over the course of a decade.
With little control over the levers of power in Congress, Democrats have attempted to draw attention to what they say will be the harmful impacts of the Senate GOP health care legislation.
Senate Democrats convened a flurry of press conferences this week to denounce the bill, while Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who is technically not a Democrat, but is nevertheless part of Senate Democratic leadership, held rallies in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania to rally opposition against the bill.
Now the message from Democrats is that the fight isn’ t over.
“They weren’ t able to pass their cruelest, and most hurtful version of the bill, but that doesn’ t mean they’ re not going to come back with a bill that is still cruel, and hurtful, ” Democratic Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts said. “I do not believe that we are going to be able to preserve Obamacare unless we work every day, 24-hours a day, until the Republicans finally give up, ” he added. “We have to keep our energy level high… That’s the only way we are going to win.”
Senate Democrats may be particularly wary of declaring victory too early after watching House GOP legislation to dismantle the Affordable Care Act stall out, only to be revived weeks later and passed.
The challenge now for opponents of the healthcare bill will be to keep the pressure on Republican senators during the July 4th recess, where they will return to their districts.
“If we survive this week with the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid intact, the lesson anyone who cares about health care has to learn is that it’s dangerous to take your eye of the ball even for a day, ” Ben Wikler of the progressive advocacy group MoveOn.org said in an interview before McConnell’s Tuesday announcement. “If Trumpcare isn’ t passed, isn’ t defeated, but is merely delayed this week, it is absolutely vital for anyone who cares about the healthcare system to dial up their pressure over the fourth of July recess.”
Of course, Republicans will be making their case for the bill’s passage too.
“The schedule may have changed a little but, but one thing hasn’ t changed and that is that Obamacare is collapsing, ” Republican Senator John Thune said on Tuesday during a press conference. “It is a failed system that needs to be replaced, and we believe the legislation that we’ re trying to get up on the Senate floor and consider there will take America in a better direction.”
But even for their apparent reluctance to declare victory, some Senate Democrats evidently believe the road to passage for Republicans will be more difficult now that McConnell has delayed its vote.
“This bill is like a stinking fish, it’s just going to get worse, ” Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut said in an interview. “We’ re going to bring this to every state across the country. This is what we wanted. We wanted to be able to bring this debate out of Washington and back to our states. I think that’s going to be the death knell for this bill.”
Democrats also hope the delay will create an opportunity for constituents opposed to the bill to convey their objections directly to Republican senators.
“I think it’s going to be a very tough two weeks for the Republicans to be hearing from their constituents at home who have now been educated as to what the impact of these cuts will be on the services their families receive, ” Markey said. “I think it’s only going to complicate dramatically the complexity of their political dilemma.”

'We started seeing sparks': NYC subway derailment injures 34

0

A subway train derailed near a station in Harlem on Tuesday, frightening passengers and resulting in 34 non-life-threatening injuries.
NEW YORK — A subway train derailed near a station in Harlem on Tuesday, frightening passengers and resulting in minor injuries as hundreds of people were evacuated from trains along the subway line.
“We started seeing sparks through the windows. People were falling, ” said passenger Susan Pak, of Englewood Cliffs, N. J. She said the A train jerked and began shaking violently as it approached the station at 125th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue.
Two of the eight cars on the train derailed just before 10 a.m. Sparks from the skidding train briefly ignited garbage on the track, but there was no serious fire, said Joe Lhota, chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The cause was under investigation. Lhota said the emergency braking system on the train triggered, but it wasn’ t immediately clear why. He said he didn’ t know yet whether a passenger had pulled the emergency brake.
“This, to the best of my knowledge, does not look like a failure on the part of equipment, does not look like a failure on the part of the track itself, ” he said. “We need to determine what it is.”
Fire officials said 34 people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Three other trains were in the tunnel at the time of the derailment, he said. All were evacuated.
It’s unclear what effect the situation would have on the afternoon commute. For now, Lhota said, service on the affected train line is suspended.
Delays were reported throughout the subway system, which has been plagued by problems this year.
“People are terrified, ” John Raskin, Riders Alliance executive director, told NY1 television. “It’s clear we have an outdated and crumbling public transit system. It’s not just a convenience — it’s dangerous.… If this doesn’ t get the attention of Gov. (Andrew) Cuomo and state lawmakers, I don’ t know what will.”
In the aftermath of the derailment, some passengers cried. A few tried to pry open a door before others warned them not to exit and risk touching the electrified third rail, Pak said.
“When it first started derailing, there were some screams and shouts, ” passenger Steve Epstein told NY1. He said there was white smoke, and “there was a lot of banging around in that car — it was really bad.”
“But when it came to a stop and we looked around and everyone was all right, everyone was pretty calm, ” Epstein said. “It was quite a ride.”
Other trains approaching the station halted in their tracks. Pictures and video posted on social media showed passengers evacuating through darkened subway tunnels. Emergency crews shut off track power after derailments to prevent evacuees from being electrocuted.
Julian Robinson said he was stuck on one stopped train for 45 minutes to an hour before rescuers arrived to escort passengers along the tracks into the station.
“People didn’ t panic, ” he said. He said the station wasn’ t smoky, but there was a strong, acrid smell.
The number of subway delays have tripled in the past five years, to 70,000 per month. In recent months, several high-profile incidents have occurred, including subway trains stuck in tunnels for an hour or more. In April, a power outage backed up trains around the city and closed a key Manhattan station for 12 hours.
Commuter railroads have also had problems recently. A report earlier this month found rush-hour cancellations and delays on New York’s Long Island Rail Road are at the highest level in 10 years.

What's next on health care now that the Senate has punted?

0

Senate Republicans have gone back to the drawing board to get an Obamacare repeal bill they can pass.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., pulled the plug Tuesday on his Obamacare repeal bill, saying Republicans would resume talks to see whether they can get a bill they’ll agree upon.
No, the bill is not dead.
This is the moment to recall that the House had to pull its legislation from the floor in almost the exact same pattern — Republican leaders were not certain they would get enough GOP votes to pass it — and it took several weeks and several rounds of revisions before they could push the bill through .
The first step for McConnell and other Republican leaders is to get everybody in a room and figure out what it would take to get various factions on board. Moderates like Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada have argued that the cuts to Medicaid are too severe; perhaps McConnell can add enough Medicaid money to get Heller on board. Conservatives like Sen. Mike Lee of Utah wanted to see more flexibility for states to waive coverage requirements; perhaps there is a way to write this flexibility into the bill.
McConnell said he hopes to iron out some of these detail this week and then bring the bill up after the July Fourth recess.
Nope.
Democrats have said they would be willing to meet with Republicans to discuss changes to Obamacare, but only if Republicans give up on the idea of “repeal.”
McConnell said Tuesday he has no plans to begin talks with Democrats because “they’re not interested in participating in this.”
Trump is taking an active role in trying to get Republicans to agree on a bill and invited all of the GOP senators to the White House on Tuesday to talk about it. He was very active in negotiations over the House bill, and he may be able to push lawmakers to cut a deal.
But his public statements on the bill have been a vague. A week ago he tweeted that he was “very supportive” of the Senate bill…
… but he told a gathering of tech CEOs that the bill still needed “a little negotiation.”
On Monday, he seemed to suggest maybe Congress should just give up on passing a bill.

George Lucas Strikes Back at Autograph Hounds: ‘Get a Job’

The “Star Wars” creator does not take kindly to people profiting from his signature TMZ shot footage of the “Star Wars” creator snapping back at autograph seekers in Beverly Hills on Monday night. Someone behind the camera asks for Lucas’ opinion on various issues — director Ron…
If you make George Lucas mad, he may not block you on Twitter, but he will tell you to get a job, as a few hapless autograph seekers recently discovered.
TMZ shot footage of the “Star Wars” creator snapping back at autograph seekers in Beverly Hills on Monday night.
Lucas is seen writing his signature to fans’ posters as a large bodyguard stands watch. At first, the scene looks relatively peaceful. Someone behind the camera asks for Lucas’ opinion on various issues — director Ron Howard taking over the Han Solo movie, and an impending L.A. City Council vote on a $1.5 billion museum in Lucas’ name — to which he gives short but polite answers.
Lucas puts up his hand and quickly dismisses one bold autograph seeker. But when another crosses the line, Lucas decides he has had enough. “No, I’ m not going to keep doing that, ” he says defiantly. “This is a $200 signature, so why don’ t you just go out and get a job?”
The filmmaker believed some of the pushy autograph hopefuls were attempting to cash in from his signature by selling them on the internet. “These people are here to make money, ” he explained in the video. “They’ re not fans. They just want to make money.”
According to Huffington Post, Lucas’ estimate of $200 a signature is “nearly spot-on, ” as some signed items sell for exactly that on eBay.
With all the shade Lucas threw at them, those autograph seekers may want to consider joining the Jedi Order to get some exposure to the light side of The Force.
Watch the video above.

14-Year-Old Shogi Player Breaks Record for Most Consecutive Wins

Japan’s youngest professional shogi player, 14-year old Sota Fujii, has set a record in his first matches as a professional player by winning 29 consecutive matches.
Sujii set his record Monday, June 26, after a match against 19-year-old Yasuhiro Masuda that went on for 11 hours, including breaks to eat and go the bathroom.
Shogi has similarities to chess in that the goal of the game is to capture the king. One big difference between chess and shogi is that pieces captured from opponents can be recycled and put back into the game, making it more complex. The game is played on a nine by nine square board on a block of wood on the floor between the two players, and there are 20 pieces.
The previous record of 28 wins was set in 1987 by Hiroshi Kamiya, then a 56-year-old eighth dan player, the Japan Times reported. The ranking system for Shogi is fourth dan through ninth dan, with fourth being the lowest and ninth being the highest.
Even Sujii, a fourth dan player, was surprised by his winning streak.
“Personally winning 29 times in a row was something beyond my imagination,
so I feel happy but at the same time am also very surprised, ” he said.
In his first match in December, Sota defeated the previous youngest professional shogi player, 76-year-old Hifumi Kato, the AP reported. Kato was the youngest player back in the 1950s.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a reporter outside his home, “I think it was a victory that gave hope and dreams to the people in Japan.”
Sujii’s not resting on his laurels though. He said he wants to increase his skills so he can keep his title.
He will have an opportunity to extend his winning streak in less than a week as his next match is July 2, the AP reported.

Mitch McConnell Delays Senate Healthcare Vote

0

Senate Majority Mitch McConnell delayed the vote on the Senate healthcare reform bill, known until after July 4th.
McConnell previously said that the Senate needs to vote on the BCRA before the July 4th recess to allow for more time on other priority issues such as tax reform and the budget.
Several conservative senators such as Rand Paul (R-KY) , Ted Cruz (R-TX) , Mike Lee (R-UT) , Ron Johnson (R-WI) , and moderate senators such as Susan Collins (R-ME) and Dean Heller (R-NV) have announced that they cannot vote for the bill in its current form. Republicans maintain a slim majority in the Senate. McConnell could only afford to lose two Senators and have Vice President Mike Pence break the tie to pass the BCRA.
The Senate bill continues to mirror the House bill: Speaker Paul Ryan had to delay the vote on the House’s American Health Care Act (AHCA) to gather more support for the bill.
