China's central bank guides yuan higher at fastest pace since 2005 against dollar

0

NewsHubChina’s central bank Friday guided the yuan stronger at the fastest pace in a decade against the dollar, stepping up efforts to support the currency amid concerns over capital outflows from the world’s second-largest economy.
The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the yuan reference rate at 6.8668 against the dollar, compared with 6.9307 on Thursday. The 0.9 percent change over the previous day’s fixing was the greatest since 2005, according to Reuters data.
Friday’s level marked the highest fixing for the yuan against the greenback since Dec. 6.
China regulators introduced new rules this year, which will take effect in July, requiring financial institutions on the mainland to report domestic and overseas cash transactions of more than 50,000 yuan (around $7,217), down from 200,000 yuan previously, Reuters reported.
Starting from Jan. 1, the country’s foreign-exchange regulator also planned to step up scrutiny on foreign-currency purchases, Reuters reported. In addition, the supply of yuan in Hong Kong, where the currency trades a bit more freely, has also been curtailed in a move analysts said was aimed at deterring punters from betting on further declines.
The rebound in the yuan also reflected weakness in the dollar, which has retreated as traders pared long positions. The dollar retreated to the 101 handle against a basket of currencies, trading at 101.64, down from levels above 103.60 reached earlier in the week.

Israel PM Netanyahu questioned again in corruption probe

0

NewsHubIsraeli police have questioned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a second time as part of an inquiry into corruption allegations.
The five-hour questioning at his Jerusalem home followed a slightly shorter session on Monday.
The PM is being investigated for allegedly accepting “improper gifts” worth thousands of dollars from businessmen, media say.
Mr Netanyahu has continually and strongly denied any wrongdoing.
Police said Thursday’s questioning had also included a separate matter but gave no details and Mr Netanyahu’s office has not commented.
Ahead of the first questioning on Monday, Mr Netanyahu had restated he was innocent and warned the media and political rivals that they should “hold off partying”, adding: “Nothing will happen, because there is nothing. ”
Mr Netanyahu told his Likud party legislators earlier on Monday: “We hear all the media reports. We see and hear the festive spirit and atmosphere in television studios and in the corridors of the opposition.
“I want to tell them to wait for the celebrations. Do not rush… You will continue to inflate hot air balloons and we will continue to lead the state of Israel. ”
Opponents of Mr Netanyahu have called for an investigation into his affairs following a series of scandals in recent months – none of which has resulted in charges.

Conan O'Brien's 'Conan' could switch to weekly format on TBS

0

NewsHub“[Conan] has a very full plate in things that we’re going to be going the next step on in the next six months, and that led him to ask me, ‘Well, how do we balance this with the talk show?'” Turner Entertainment chief creative officer Kevin Reilly told Variety Thursday. “He’s going to have a show on TBS for many years to come. Right now what form that takes in relation to these other endeavors is in flux. Is going to once a week a possibility? It is. That’s going to come from him when he’s ready to get his hands around that. ”
The Wrap reported earlier Thursday that “TBS is planning to retool… ‘Conan’ to a weekly format instead of a nightly one. ” John Martin, the CEO of Turner — which owns both TBS and CNN — reportedly told The Wrap that the move would be made, in part, due to an over-saturated late night lineup across TV.
But TBS put out a statement from Reilly which suggested that if a move to a weekly format does happen, it won’t be right now.
“As the media landscape continues to evolve, Conan will continue to lead the evolution of what a talk show will be in the digital age. At this time, we have no plans to change the format or frequency of his popular TBS show,” the statement said. “In addition to Conan’s daily responsibilities to his talk show, we continue to have very ambitious plans that will further broaden and evolve our relationship with Conan. ”
Reilly told The Hollywood Reporter that O’Brien will “continue to have a daily relationship with an audience. ” But, he said, “I don’t know whether that will be on a number of different services, including TBS. That’s the part we’re trying to figure out; how does that all work together? ”
The weekly format has worked for O’Brien’s talk show counterpart on TBS, Samantha Bee, whose “Full Frontal” stood out during the election.
O’Brien’s show currently ranks last among the major late night shows on broadcast and cable, averaging 597,000 viewers so far this season.
“Conan” premiered on TBS in 2010 following his short but much discussed stint as host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show. “

Trump Tweetwatch: N Korea nuclear plans 'won't happen'

0

NewsHubDonald Trump often tweets several times a day but doesn’t dwell on policy issues and rarely speaks to the press. So his 140-character messages are the main insight we have into the thinking of the US president-elect. But what can they tell us about how his new administration will deal with the world?
Mr Trump rubbished North Korea’s claim to be developing missiles capable of striking the US, tweeting “it won’t happen” on Monday at 15:05 EST (20:05 GMT).
It’s not particularly clear. It could indicate that Mr Trump believes that North Korea will not be able to develop the technology necessary. Or he may think the country’s government will collapse, or that the new US administration will be able to persuade North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un to give up his nuclear programme.
The BBC’s Stephen Evans, in Seoul, says the South Korean government has interpreted the tweet as a warning to Mr Kim that the US will stop such a development from happening, either by military action or by disruptive covert operations.
But with the tweet so ambiguous, it is open to many alternative interpretations too.
The US president-elect has previously called Mr Kim a “bad dude”, but he has also said he would be willing to speak to him over a burger (such a meeting would be a significant change of US policy towards North Korea).
In an interview in May, Mr Trump said the isolated state’s main backer – China – needed to take action to ease tensions. “China can solve that problem with one meeting or one phone call,” he told Reuters.
And in a follow-up tweet on Monday, Mr Trump said: “China has been taking out massive amounts of money & wealth from the U. S. in totally one-sided trade, but won’t help with North Korea. Nice! ”
How might Trump deal with Kim Jong-un?
The US has long aimed to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear programme, using a mixture of aid and sanctions, although in October the national intelligence director James Clapper said this was “probably a lost cause”.
In March 2016 President Obama imposed new sanctions on North Korea after it carried out a nuclear test and a satellite launch. The White House spokesman said: “We will continue to impose costs on North Korea until it comes into compliance with its international obligations. ”
The United Nations Security Council has also imposed sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear programme.
How advanced is North Korea’s nuclear programme?

Samsung profit estimate surges despite Note 7 battery fiasco

0

NewsHubDespite the fiasco with its flagship Note 7 phone, Samsung Electronics reported a 50% profit surge in its guidance for the fourth quarter.
The earnings estimate is higher than analysts’ predicted and would mark its highest quarterly profit since 2013.
In October, the world’s largest smartphone maker had to scrap the Note 7 after batteries caught fire and even replacement devices went up in smoke.
The strong results are due to Samsung’s semiconductor and display businesses.
The South Korean tech giant said it expected to post 9.2tn won ($7.8bn, £6.2bn) in operating profit for the months from September to December.
“When you look at the headlines over the last couple of months it’s always been about exploding batteries and doom for Samsung,” Bryan Ma, technology consultant with IDC told the BBC.
“But we’ve got to keep in mind that that’s not their only business – what’s really driving these earnings is strong demand for memory and displays. And they are really, really profitable businesses. ”
In an earlier profit forecast for the fourth quarter, Samsung had said it expected the Note 7 recall would mean a $2.1bn hit to their profits.
The company first issued a recall for the Galaxy Note 7 in September following complaints about exploding batteries.
After replacement devices deemed safe were also found to overheat and catch fire, the company scrapped the phone entirely.
“Yet the end of the day, what happened with the Note 7 – as painful as it was – bounced right off of Samsung because all their other business helped offset it,” Mr Ma said.
Samsung said that it will “very soon” share details of its inquiry into the cause of the Note 7 problems.
The company will disclose a detailed earnings release for the quarter in late January which will give more insights into the performance of its individual businesses.

Russian hacking claims: Biden tells Trump to 'grow up'

0

NewsHubUS Vice-President Joe Biden has told President-elect Donald Trump to “grow up” and criticised his attacks on the intelligence community.
On Friday, Mr Trump will be briefed on allegations Russia meddled in November’s US presidential election.
But Mr Trump has cast doubt on claims of Russian involvement, and criticised the intelligence community in tweets.
Mr Biden said it was “absolutely mindless” for the president-elect not to have faith in intelligence agencies.
“For a president not to have confidence in, not to be prepared to listen to, the myriad intelligence agencies, from defence intelligence to the CIA, is absolutely mindless,” he said in an interview with the PBS network.
“The idea that you may know more than the intelligence community knows – it’s like saying I know more about physics than my professor. I didn’t read the book, I just know I know more. ”
When asked what he thought of Mr Trump’s regular attacks on Twitter, Mr Biden said: “Grow up Donald, grow up, time to be an adult, you’re president. Time to do something. Show us what you have. ”
He went on to call Mr Trump “a good man”.
Mr Biden said he had read a report by US intelligence agencies that outlined the extent of Russian involvement in the build-up to the US election.
Mr Trump is to be briefed on the report on Friday, and an unclassified version will be made public next week.
Mr Biden said the report clearly details “that the Russians did, as a matter of policy, attempt to affect and… discredit the US electoral process”.
He said the hacking was part of a systematic campaign to undermine Hillary Clinton, Mr Trump’s rival in the presidential race.
And he added that the hacking was far more widespread than had been suspected. Among those known to have been hacked were John Podesta, Mrs Clinton’s campaign manager, and the servers of the Democratic National Committee.
The documents were then published by the Wikileaks website.
On Thursday, the Director of National Intelligence, General James Clapper, told a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the hack, and said the motive would be revealed next week.
Russia has denied involvement but the US has announced sanctions against Russian officials.
Mr Trump has repeatedly rejected allegations that the Russian government hacked into the computers of Mr Podesta or the servers of the Democratic National Committee.
On Wednesday, he repeated a suggestion that “a 14-year-old” may have been responsible for the breach.
On Thursday, he said he was a “big fan” of intelligence agencies, after months of casting doubt on the Russian link, but later went on to raise questions over how the Democratic Party responded to the security breach.
“How and why are they so sure about hacking if they never even requested an examination of the computer servers? What is going on? ” he asked in a tweet .
Last week, Mr Trump said he would announce information about hacking “on Tuesday or Wednesday”, but no announcement came.
Mr Trump’s inauguration will take place on 20 January.

Top Russians Celebrated When Trump Won, Intel Report Says: Source

0

NewsHubA senior U. S. intelligence official with direct knowledge confirmed to NBC News that the report on Russian hacking delivered to President Obama Thursday says that U. S. intelligence picked up senior Russian officials celebrating Donald Trump ‘s win.
The source described the intelligence about the celebration, first reported by the Washington Post, as a minor part of the overall intelligence report, which makes the case that Russia intervened in the election.
“Highly classified intercepts illustrate Russian government planning and direction of a multifaceted campaign by Moscow to undermine the integrity of the American political system,” said the official.
The source also noted, however, that communication intercepts are viewed with caution because they are subject to interpretation.
Some of the hacks were successful, say the officials, while others were thwarted.
The report, on which Obama was also orally briefed, explains what intelligence agencies believe are Moscow’s motives, including, in part, a desire to disrupt the American democratic process.
But the intelligence analysts who prepared the report also concluded that the hacks were payback for the Obama administration’s questioning of Vladimir Putin’s legitimacy as president.
The report tracks Russian cyber activity during the 2016 presidential campaign, but also goes back as far as 2008.
It does not speculate on whether Russian interference, including the alleged hacks of Democratic Party emails and the subsequent leaking on those emails on the internet, affected the outcome of the 2016 contest.
President Obama said today he has full faith in the report, but President-elect Trump, who’ll get the same briefing tomorrow, has been voicing skepticism about the intelligence community’s findings.
President Obama said he thought when his successor gets the details, he might change his mind.
“When the President-Elect receives his own briefings and is able to examine the intelligence, as his team is put together and they see how professional and effective these agencies are, some of those current tensions will be reduced. ”

Stars visit Reynolds, Fisher houses for reported funeral

0

NewsHubA parade of somber stars visited the next-door homes of Debbie Reynolds and daughter Carrie Fisher on a gloomy Thursday afternoon amid reports that a private memorial was scheduled at the compound to mourn the late actresses. Meryl Streep, Meg Ryan, Ellen Barkin and Ed Begley Jr. were among those entering the property in the Coldwater Canyon area of Los Angeles.
Press, private security and police assembled on the street outside of the homes, which are tucked away at the end of a long driveway and hidden by trees and shrubs in the tony neighborhood just north of Beverly Hills.
Streep, who starred in the adaptation of Fisher’s semi-autobiographical novel “Postcards from the Edge,” was carrying white flowers as she walked up the driveway, choosing to ignore questions from the media gathered on the street. Streep knew both mother and daughter — she had presented Reynolds with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the film academy’s Governors Awards in 2015.
Also visiting the compound Thursday were Jamie Lee Curtis, who stars with Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd, on TV’s “Scream Queens,” and Eric Idle, a friend of Fisher’s who rented her his home during the filming of “The Empire Strikes Back.”
Fisher and Reynolds died last week, one day apart, casting a pall over Hollywood’s annual holiday break. Fisher, 60, an actress and writer who starred as Princess Leia in the original “Star Wars” trilogy, died Dec. 27 after suffering a medical emergency Dec. 23 aboard a flight from London. Reynolds, 84, an Oscar-nominated actress who shot to fame after starring in “Singin’ in the Rain” at age 19, passed away Dec. 28 after being briefly hospitalized.
“She said, ‘I want to be with Carrie,’” Reynolds’ son, Todd Fisher, told The Associated Press. “And then she was gone.”
Fisher and Reynolds will be buried together at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills, reportedly on Friday. The sprawling location is the resting place of numerous celebrities, including Lucille Ball, Dick Van Patten, Liberace, Florence Henderson, David Carradine and Bette Davis.
Todd Fisher and other family representatives did not immediately respond to requests for further details about the memorial and burial services.
Lourd, 24, made her first public comment on the deaths of her mother and grandmother on Instagram Monday.
“Receiving all of your prayers and kind words over the past week has given me strength during a time I thought strength could not exist,” Lourd wrote under a picture of the three women. “There are no words to express how much I will miss my Abadaba and my one and only Momby.”
People inside and outside of show business have continued to mourn the two Hollywood legends. Last week, fans created an impromptu star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame for Fisher, and peers like “Star Wars’” Mark Hamill have written heartfelt tributes.
HBO bumped up plans to air the new Fisher Stevens-directed documentary about the mother, daughter duo, “Bright Lights,” which is now set to air on Saturday.
Elsewhere Thursday, Broadway theaters announced plans to dim their marquee lights Friday night. The Broadway League says the lights will be dimmed for one minute at 7:45 p.m.
Reynolds and Fisher both made their Broadway debuts in 1973 in the musical comedy revival of “Irene,” which earned Reynolds a Tony Award nomination. She also appeared on Broadway in “Woman of the Year” and the musical revue “Debbie.”
Fisher’s Broadway credits include her one-woman show “Wishful Drinking,” ”Agnes of God” and “Censored Scenes From King Kong.”
