Gambia crisis: Yahya Jammeh stays on despite deadline

Dakar – After more than two decades in power, Gambian President Yahya Jammeh faced the prospect of a military intervention by regional forces, as the man who once pledged to rule the West African nation for a billion years clung to power.
A few minutes after a midnight deadline set by the West African regional bloc to step down, there was no word from Jammeh.
Earlier, a military commander with the regional bloc known as Ecowas announced that troops were positioning along Gambia’s borders.
“The mandate of the president is finished at midnight,” declared Seydou Maiga Moro, speaking on Senegalese radio station RFM. “All the troops are already in place,” he added, saying they were merely waiting to see whether Jammeh would acquiesce to international pressure to cede power to President-elect Adama Barrow.
As midnight approached, Jammeh met with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz on the crisis. The Mauritanian plane left Gambia shortly before midnight.
Special charter flights
Thousands of Gambians have fled the country, including some former cabinet ministers who resigned in recent days. Hundreds of foreign tourists were evacuating on special charter flights, though some continued to relax poolside despite the political turmoil. Gambia is a popular beach destination in winter, especially for tourists from Britain, the former colonial power.
The downtown area of the Gambian capital, Banjul, was empty late on Wednesday, with all shops closed. But there was no visible military presence apart from a checkpoint at the entrance to the city, despite the threat of incoming forces.
Tiny Gambia is surrounded by Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean. Late Wednesday, witnesses reported Senegalese soldiers deploying in the Senegalese Kaolack region, north of Gambia, and in the southern Senegalese region of Casamance.
In another sign of the international pressure, Nigeria confirmed a warship was heading toward Gambia for “training,” and RFM radio reported that Nigerian military equipment had begun arriving in Dakar in advance of the midnight deadline. Ghana also has pledged to contribute militarily.
Barrow’s inauguration
The regional bloc was seeking the UN Security Council’s endorsement of its “all necessary measures” to remove Jammeh. “There is a sense that the whole situation rests in the hands of one person, and it’s up to that person, the outgoing president of the Gambia, to draw the right conclusions,” said Sweden’s UN Ambassador Olof Skoog, the current council president.
Jammeh, who first seized power in a 1994 coup, has insisted that his rule was ordained by Allah. He initially conceded defeat after the December vote, but after reports emerged suggesting he could face criminal charges linked to his rule, he reversed himself a week later. He said voting irregularities invalidated the results, and his party went to court seeking a new round of voting. The case has stalled because the supreme court currently only has one sitting judge.
Human rights groups have long accused Jammeh of arresting, jailing and killing political opponents, and there have been widespread fears for Barrow’s safety amid the post-election turmoil. Tensions have been so high that Barrow has remained in the Senegalese capital since last weekend, at the advice of Ecowas mediators, who feared for his safety. He was not even able to return to Banjul for his 7-year-old son’s funeral on Monday after the child was fatally mauled by a dog.
The opposition vowed on Wednesday to go ahead with Barrow’s inauguration, though there were no signs of preparation at the Banjul stadium where it was supposed to be held. It was unclear whether Barrow would take the oath at a Gambian Embassy outside the country or if he would return.
Peaceful change
“Those who resist peaceful change, effective 12 midnight tonight, shall face definite consequences, to their peril,” said Mai Ahmad Fatty, Barrow’s special adviser, in a Facebook post on Wednesday in which he urged Gambians to stay indoors. “Anyone with firearms tonight shall be deemed a rebel, and will certainly become a legitimate target. ”
As other longtime West African strongmen have died or been forced to step down in recent years, Jammeh has remained a rare exception — even launching a campaign to anoint himself “King of Gambia. ”
In 2007, he claimed to have developed a cure for Aids that involved an herbal body rub and bananas. Alarming public health experts, he insisted Aids sufferers stop taking antiretroviral medications.
Two years later, his government rounded up nearly 1 000 people it accused of being witches, forcing them to drink a hallucinogen that caused diarrhea and vomiting. Two people died, according to Amnesty International.
More recently, Jammeh seemed bent on increasing Gambia’s isolation on the world stage. In 2013 he exited the Commonwealth, a group made up mostly of former British colonies, branding it a “neo-colonial institution. ”
He also issued increasingly virulent statements against sexual minorities, vowing to slit the throats of gay men and saying the LGBT acronym should stand for “leprosy, gonorrhea, bacteria and tuberculosis. ” And in October, Jammeh said Gambia would leave the International Criminal Court, which he dismissed as the “International Caucasian Court. ”

Fire Emblem: Heroes headed to Android, iOS next month

0

NewsHubFire Emblem heads to Android on February 2, but iOS users look like they’ll have to wait a bit longer for Nintendo’s next mobile game.
Nintendo’s newest Direct event offered us a closer look at the game’s art style, story and combat. This is a new chapter in the Fire Emblem franchise, with two kingdoms pitted against one another in an epic battle. You play a summoner from the kingdom of Askr, tasked with calling upon allies and heroes to fight beside you to save your people.
Based on the trailer, there’s some beautifully hand-drawn artwork to look forward to, and the style of combat will be your typical turn-based strategy, but with some twists. Terrain will come into play on the maps, and it seems like certain characters will have specific movement limitations/abilities. Each map is on a simple grid, and individual fights occur in a cutscene-like popup window.
As for your party’s heroes, you’ll be able to collect orbs as you play (or, of course, buy them via IAP — according to one screenshot, a pack of 35 orbs will cost about $20 — roughly converted to £16 or AU$26, and 3 will set you back $1.99) and summon random heroes to your party that you can decide to make an ally. If you don’t ask them to join up with you, they could show up on the opposing kingdom’s lineup, so there does seem to be a bit of depth there in terms of choosing who joins up and who doesn’t. All the standard RPG mechanics are here, including leveling up your characters and raising their attributes, making them (and your team) more powerful as you play.
In a slight surprise, Nintendo announced an official release date for Android today, but not iOS. Super Mario Run currently enjoys an iOS exclusive, and the Google Play Store page for the game still says the game is “coming soon,” so seeing an official launch date already set will be a nice surprise for Android users.
UPDATE: In a tweet posted after the Direct event, Nintendo announced the game would release simultaneously on both iOS and Android on February 2, 2017.

Apple’s GarageBand and Logic Pro X get big updates including Touch Bar support

0

NewsHubApple has today announced several impressive updates for GarageBand on iOS and Logic Pro X on Mac. If you happen to use both of these music-creation tools, the biggest news will likely be the ability to add new tracks to your Logic sessions via a cloud-based, GarageBand-compatible version of your project – making it easier than ever to create tracks on the go.
The updated GarageBand for iOS (now at version 2.2) has been blessed with the acclaimed software synthesizer Alchemy , which was acquired by Apple from Camel Audio early in 2015 and has since become a staple of Logic Pro X. On top of this, it’s now much easier to rifle through your sample libraries and Touch instruments to find the right tool for the job thanks to a powerful redesigned sound browser.
Multi-Take Recording allows you to pick your best moments without having to fiddle for hours, and GarageBand’s redesigned audio recorder can utilise simple one-touch effects, along with more detailed studio treatments like delay and pitch correction. A new array of included effects is joined by the ability to use third-party plugins (in the AU format) to help you get the most out of your mixes.
The improvements that come with Logic Pro X’s new version 10.3 range from an interface overhaul that promises better “legibility in a variety of working environments” , alongside a professional grade 64-bit summing engine.
Support for the new MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar means that you can have quick access to timeline navigation as well as volume and Smart Controls for each track. It also can be used as a piano roll with selectable scales, or a set of drum pads when in performance mode, reducing the need for external controllers.
Similar to GarageBand’s multi-take recording but on a grander scale, Logic’s new Track Alternatives feature allows you to listen to, and directly compare, different versions of your creation. For example, create a ‘playlist’ in a certain region of your track and you can see how it works with the rest of the arrangement, eliminating the need to have a nightmare list of past versions of your project.
Both updates are available for free for all existing users, but if you think it’s time you jumped on board, you can grab Logic Pro X for $199.99 (£149.99, AU$319.99) from the Mac App Store, and while GarageBand for iOS is included with newer iOS products, non-qualifying devices can have it for a mere $4.99 (£3.99, AU$7.99).

Go behind the scenes at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

0

NewsHubEver wanted to wander around Harry Potter’s beloved school of Hogwarts or Ollivander’s wand shop?
This video , posted on Monday, reveals some of the interesting trivia behind the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood. Alan Gilmore, art director from the Harry Potter movies , gives a tour of the attraction and points out stuff like real movie props and costumes worn in the films.
Gilmore talks about some of the coolest parts of the attraction, including the Weasleys’ flying Ford Anglia car , Ollivander’s wand shop, Hogwart’s Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom and unusual corridors of Hogwarts.
The Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom houses actual props from the Harry Potter films, including the ornate blackboard, a vintage school desk and school books.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter also has many of the movies’ costumes on display at Gladrags Wizardwear, including Yule ball dresses worn by Hermione Granger and Cho Chang.
Gillmore also shows off his own wizarding skills when he demonstrates the Unlocking Charm , also known as the Thief’s Friend, by pointing his wand at the Ollivander’s shop window and saying “Alohomora. ” Most impressive indeed.

Patrick Stewart to play Poop? The legend says 'make it so'

0

NewsHubWil Wheaton, Jonathan Frakes and Patrick Stewart on “Star Trek: The Next Generation. ”
Patrick Stewart’s long, storied career has taken him from ” Make it so, Number One ” to being made into a number two. The long-time Shakespearean actor who inspired many a nerd like me as Captain Picard on ” Star Trek: The Next Generation ” and Professor Xavier in the ” X-Men ” movies will soon be portraying Poop in ” The Emoji Movie. ”
To be clear, Stewart will only be lending his voice to the animated feature. T. J. Miller of ” Silicon Valley ,” ” Broad City ‘s” Ilana Glazer, Maya Rudolph, Rob Riggle and James Corden are also in the cast of the film, which follows an emoji’s adventure traveling through a teenager’s phone, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Some might say that Stewart’s career has taken him from the most well-regarded, high brow roles in classics like “Hamlet,” through a successful career in science fiction mega-franchises only to come out the other end as a steaming hot pile of… emoji.
But this latest role only reaffirms Stewart’s status as a hero in my eyes. Captain Jean-Luc Picard taught a younger, painfully awkward version of me that a man could be successful and admired in spite of a clearly terrible wardrobe.
Stewart will continue to be my captain even as he trades a barstool in Ten Forward for a turn as a stool. Anyone with such an above average sense of humor and a below average ego has figured something out about life.
“The Emoji Movie” is set to hit theaters August 4.

Viele Tote in verschüttetem Hotel in Italien

0
