Former AG Mike Mukasey: 'Might Not Be a Bad Idea' for Comey to Quit FBI

0

NewsHubFormer Attorney General Michael Mukasey said Saturday that “it might not be a bad idea” if FBI Director James Comey resigned amid an investigation by the Justice Department’s inspector general of his handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe.
“He has been compromised that much,” he added. “It is his own, not that he has been compromised by his own people. ”
The review includes examining the agency’s actions leading up to Comey’s decision to announce findings of his probe on July 5.
He said then that Clinton and her top aides were “extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information” but that no charges should be pursued.
Comey then announced, just days before the Nov. 8 election, that he was re-opening — then again closing — the email investigation.
Democrats have charged that Comey’s actions damaged Clinton’s candidacy and helped Republican Donald Trump win the White House.
“Whatever position he is in, he’s in having put himself there,” Mukasey told Pemmaraju. “The handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails was done in a way that is unlike any criminal investigation that I have ever seen.
“It was not handled in the normal fashion. No grand jury was used. All sorts of irregularities.
“What’s necessary is a complete top-to-bottom investigation, at least of the Clinton matter — so that we know what happened, we know how the investigation was conducted, we know where the shortcomings are,” Mukasey added.
“The trouble is in the current atmosphere, his credibility within the FBI is somewhat compromised. “

Tamir Rice's mother upset with Cleveland police probe

0

NewsHubThe mother of Tamir Rice is upset that a police officer who shot and killed her 12-year-old son will again avoid charges in the shooting that contributed to the national outcry over minorities dying at the hands of police.
Cleveland officials said Friday that the rookie patrolman will face internal discipline charges over accusations of lying on his police application, but he won’t face an internal review for his use of force.
The decision comes about a year after county prosecutors decided against pursuing criminal charges in the 2014 shooting against officer Timothy Loehmann.
The U. S. Department of Justice still is reviewing the case.
Loehmann, who is white, fired within seconds of arriving outside a recreation center where the black boy was playing with a replica Airsoft-type gun that shoots nonlethal plastic pellets.
Loehmann and his partner had gone to the recreation center after a man called 911 to report that a “guy” was pointing a gun at people.
The boy’s mother, Samaria Rice, and her attorney said it’s “disappointing and disheartening” that Loehmann won’t face discipline for his use of force.
She said Loehmann and his partner, Frank Garmback, who was driving the patrol car that skidded to a stop a few feet from Tamir, should be fired.
“I think this process has taken entirely too long,” Rice said.
The city on Friday said disciplinary hearings will be held over the internal charges recommended against both Loehmann and Garmback.
A city spokesman said the officers could face a suspension or be fired.
Loehmann was accused of lying on his Cleveland police application and failing to mention problems he had while working for another police department.
Garmback was accused of driving his cruiser too close to Tamir and failing to report the time he arrived at the scene.
The Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association said Friday that neither officer did anything wrong that day.
The union said it is reviewing the disciplinary charges and will prepare appropriate defenses for the officers. It said there would be no comment from the officers.

Thomas stretches lead to 7 at the Sony Open

0

NewsHubJustin Thomas made a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole Saturday for a 5-udner 65 to tie the 54-hole score record on the PGA Tour and build a seven-shot lead going into the final round of the Sony Open.
No one has ever lost a PGA Tour event with a seven-shot lead, and Thomas has given no indication that will change.
His goal was to not drop any shots on another calm day at Waialae, and he wound up stretching his lead as he goes for a sweep of Hawaii. That last birdie putt put Thomas at 22-under 188, tying the mark Steve Stricker set at the 2010 John Deere Classic.
Thomas got into the record book with an eagle on his final hole in each of the previous two rounds at Waialae — a 59 on Thursday for the eighth sub-60 round in tour history, and the 36-hole scoring record Friday.
He had another chance on the par-5 18th until his second shot clipped a palm frond and came up well short. He pitched to just inside 15 feet below the cup, and poured in the putt.
Zach Johnson shot a 65 to keep pace, though he remained seven shots behind.
Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose (66) and Gary Woodland (68) were eight shots behind, though the 23-year-old Thomas has turned this into a one-man show with one round remaining as he tries to join Ernie Els in 2003 as the only players to win both Hawaii events on the PGA Tour.
The course remained so vulnerable that Kevin Kisner nearly produced the second 59 of the week. Kisner made a 25-foot birdie putt on the eighth hole to reach 9 under for his round. Needing an eagle to shoot 59, he drilled his tee shot on the fast fairways of Waialae, hit 8-iron to 9 feet and thought he had made it. The putt stayed to the right and burned the edge of the cup, and Kisner had to settle for a 60.
It was the lowest round of his career — but only the second-lowest round this week.
“Can’t be that upset,” Kisner said.
He went from making the cut on the number to a tie for sixth, though hardly in contention. Kisner still was nine shots out of the lead.
Thomas had only a few stressful moments, such as the par-3 seventh when his tee shot bounded down a steep still on the right into a fluffy lie. He hit a flop shot to about 12 feet and hit the putt so pure he started walking even before it dropped.
Thomas led by at least four shots the entire round. He made his first birdie with a two-putt on the par-5 ninth, drove into a greenside bunker on the par-4 10th and got another birdie and he was on his way.

Pats' Lewis makes playoff history with 3-TD night

NewsHubFOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis became the first player in NFL history to score rushing, receiving and kickoff return touchdowns in a playoff game, as he was a top performer in Saturday night’s AFC divisional-round playoff 36-14 win over the Houston Texans .

Rookie Tyreek Hill of the Kansas City Chiefs accomplished the feat during the regular season, but prior to that, the last player to do so in a game was Gale Sayers in 1965.
The Patriots turned to Lewis as their primary running back Saturday night, as he started over LeGarrette Blount. At halftime, he was charted on the field for 14 snaps, compared to just eight for Blount.
Lewis, just as he did in 2015 before tearing his ACL in early November, has provided a big spark to the Patriots since coming off the physically unable to perform list on Nov. 20.
Going back to last season, the Patriots haven’t lost when Lewis has been in the lineup as they are 15-0.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, Lewis is just the third player in NFL playoff history to have a receiving touchdown and kickoff return touchdown in the same game. The others were Dante Hall (Chiefs) in the 2003 divisional playoffs against the Indianapolis Colts and Jacoby Jones ( Baltimore Ravens ) in Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers.

Jimmy Butler returns, continues his MVP candidacy in Bulls' win

0

NewsHubAny questions about how important Jimmy Butler is to the Bulls were answered Saturday.
After missing nearly three games and losing 10 pounds in the last week because of the flu, Butler returned to score 28 points in the Bulls’ 107-99 victory against the New Orleans Pelicans at the United Center.
‘‘We needed that,’’ teammate Dwyane Wade said of Butler’s return. ‘‘And his leadership is very important. With this team, with us trying to get to be better, you don’t want to miss any of the consistency from your team.’’
Especially when that consistency involves Butler.
‘‘Jimmy was great,’’ coach Fred Hoiberg said. ‘‘He came out aggressive. Really was great throughout the game. Really showed how much he means to this team by being out there.’’
Butler continued to show why he is an MVP candidate midway through the regular season. He was hit with the flu before a home game Monday against the Oklahoma City Thunder and tried to play through it before Hoiberg pulled him and sent him home early. Butler then missed road games Tuesday against the Washington Wizards and Thursday against the New York Knicks.
Not coincidentally, the Bulls (20-21) lost all three of those games.
Butler, who finally was able to hold down some food, returned to the starting lineup against the Pelicans and made an instant impact. He scored 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the first quarter.
‘‘That’s a huge sign of the importance of a player for a team — how much you miss them when they’re not in the lineup,’’ Hoiberg said. ‘‘Jimmy, obviously, we’re so much better with him on the floor. You talk about just a select few in this league that have that type of impact on their overall team.
‘‘He does everything, and the thing that’s most overlooked with Jimmy — and we talk about this a lot — is a lot of these guys that are putting up these types of numbers are not guarding the other team’s best player. Jimmy goes out every night and takes pride in that role, and that’s what makes him one of the top players in this league.’’
And after Butler got the Bulls off to a good start, Wade had no problem closing late. He scored 17 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter.
‘‘When he’s making shots like that, feed the monster,’’ Butler said.
What was amazing about Wade’s performance down the stretch was that he entered the fourth quarter 2-for-13 from the field. Then it clicked, and any chance of a Pelicans comeback was crushed.
‘‘Legs weren’t in it, for some reason, but they kept coming to me,’’ Wade said. ‘‘[Butler] kept running plays for me, even when I was struggling, and it helped me confidence-wise going into that fourth quarter. Got one to fall and another to fall, and then the basket starts growing.’’

Seattle Seahawks RB C. J. Prosise out vs. Atlanta Falcons

0

NewsHubSeattle Seahawks running back C. J. Prosise was ruled out for Saturday’s divisional playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Prosise was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report, but the Seahawks were hoping the rookie could return to the field for the first time since sustaining a broken shoulder blade against the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 20.
Prosise, a third-round pick out of Notre Dame , carried 30 times for 172 yards and caught 17 passes for 208 yards in six games this season.
The Seahawks hope Prosise will be able to play next Sunday if Seattle advances to the NFC Championship Game.
Thomas Rawls is slated to be Seattle’s main back against the Falcons.

At least 3 killed in new Brazil prison beheadings

0

NewsHubAt least three inmates were brutally executed and decapitated Saturday in a prison in Brazil’s north, just days after 100 detainees died in prisons during gang-related bloodletting, officials said.
The violence erupted at the Alcacuz correctional center, the biggest in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, when members of one gang were able to storm into another where rival gang members were held.
“There are at least three inmates dead because we were able to see their heads,” state prisons manager Zemilton Silva told local media. Some local media said as many as 10 could have been killed.
The prison, just outside the state capital Natal, is built for a maximum of 620 but holds 1,100 inmates.
While real and problematic overcrowding is a fact, it is far from the only factor in the violence.
Many experts say it was part of a war between organized drug gangs in one of the world’s most important cocaine markets and trafficking routes.
Last week’s series of massacres left 100 prisoners dead — many of them active members of gangs, the authorities said.
The government has deployed 200 emergency personnel to secure the two prisons where the most blood was shed.
The largest bloodbath appeared to be an orchestrated mass killing targeting members of Brazil’s biggest gang, the First Capital Command (PCC).
It was thought to be a backlash by the PCC’s rivals for its violent expansion.
With an estimated 20,000 members, the PCC thrives even with its leader Marcos Willians Herbas Camacho, known as “Marcola,” behind bars since 1999.
Investigators say that apart from its drug-trafficking activities, it also owns bus companies, minor football clubs and an illicit gasoline refinery.
Its rival Red Command is considered Brazil’s oldest gang, dating to the 1970s.
It thrived on a cocaine boom from the 1980s, expanding from bank robberies and kidnapping to control the drug trade in Rio.

Here are all the members of Congress who are boycotting Trump’s inauguration

0

NewsHubA small but growing group of congressmen and women have announced they will not attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, breaking with generations of past precedent.
In statements explaining their decisions, the members of Congress, who have all been Democrats thus far, cited Trump’s rhetoric on women, Muslims and immigrants, as well as concerns about the role Russian hacking may have played in the presidential election.
The boycott movement began with Georgia Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights icon, who said he did not view Trump as a “legitimate president” because of allegations that Russia attempted to sway the election in Trump’s favor. After Trump responded with several highly critical tweets about Lewis, Democrats rallied behind Lewis, and as of Saturday night, 17 members of Congress have announced they will not attend.
None of the Democrats who are boycotting are part of the House leadership for their party. All except one of those who are received at least 64 percent of their district’s vote in the November election.
Arizona Rep. Raúl Grijalva
“My absence is not motivated by disrespect for the office or motivated by disrespect for the government that we have in this great democracy, but as an individual act, yes, of defiance at the disrespect shown to millions and millions of Americans by this incoming administration, and the actions we are taking in this Congress,” Grijalva said on the House floor Friday, per CNN.
California Rep. Barbara Lee
California Rep. Ted Lieu
“Trump has made statements denigrating the patriotic and professional men and women of our intelligence services, many of whom risk their lives in service to our nation. He also continues to believe Vladimir Putin over our intelligence services and is actively misleading the American people when he denies Putin ordered a brazen, multifaceted cyberattack on America to benefit Trump,” Lieu wrote in a statement.
“On January 20, Trump will be in violation of Article 1, Section 9 of the Constitution because of the massive conflicts of interests he has with his global business holdings.”

It is with a heavy heart and deep personal conviction that I have decided not to attend the #TrumpInauguration on January 20, 2017. — Mark DeSaulnier (@RepDeSaulnier) January 14, 2017
Georgia Rep. John Lewis
“I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president,” Lewis told Meet the Press. “I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected, and they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton. I don’t plan to attend the inauguration. It will be the first one that I miss since I’ve been in Congress.
Illinois Rep. Luis Gutiérrez
Gutierrez spoke from the House floor Wednesday , saying he “justify morally or intellectually the immense power we are placing in that man’s hands.”
Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark
Michigan Rep. John Conyers
A spokesperson for Coyners confirmed the decision with Politico.
Missouri Rep. William Lacy Clay
Clay told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he will be “back home in St. Louis speaking to school kids” on Jan. 20.
New York Rep. Yvette Clarke
New York Rep. Adriano Espaillat
Espaillat, the first Dominican-American in Congress, has not issued any statement on the inauguration, but Politico reports he will not attend.
New York Rep. José Serrano
New York Rep. Nydia Velazquez
Oregon Rep. Earl Blumenauer
Oregon Rep. Kurt Schrader
Schrader told Oregon Public Broadcasting he will not “freeze my a–” at the inauguration, though, “I’ll do my best to work with him when I think he’s doing the right thing for the country.”
Possibly Not Attending
New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler
The New York congressman tweeted a highly critical message of Trump after his statements on Lewis, and Politico reports that he is not attending, but he has not released any official statement. Politico also identified him as a New Jersey congressman. Nadler represents New York’s 10th District.
California Rep. Maxine Waters
Again, Waters has issued no official statement. However, she did tell Politico, “it’s just not interesting,” when asked why she wouldn’t be attending.
South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn
The highest ranking House Democrat to indicate he might not attend, Clyburn told Politico he will not attend if the weather is poor. Clyburn, who is the House Democratic Assistant Leader, is 76 years old.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders
The one-time Democratic presidential candidate has said he will “probably” attend the ceremony, per Politico.
