Review: Riley Keough can sing, but 'Daisy Jones & the Six' is a featherweight flop

Picture this: A 1970s rock band at the height of its power, with big egos, big romances and big fights brewing beneath the surface of the music.
What do you see? Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film « Almost Famous »? The real history of Fleetwood Mac? A VH1 « Behind the Music » documentary?
Not quite. Instead, what you’ll be seeing a lot of in the next month is a messy combination of all of the above in Amazon Prime’s new limited series « Daisy Jones & the Six, » based on Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 novel.
A fake documentary about a fake classic rock group that seems an awful lot like the band behind « Rumours, » « Daisy » (streaming Fridays in March, ★★ out of four) is all sex, drugs and style with none of the heart and substance of rock ’n’ roll.
It is fleeting Fleetwood fan fiction, a far cry from capturing the true essence of the ’70s era. (And the real Fleetwood Mac had more drama in just one album cycle than the fictional Daisy Jones & The Six musters in the entire series.) « Daisy » is the most disappointing of TV endeavors: Glossy, star-studded and completely hollow.
Created by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (« The Disaster Artist »), « Daisy » tells the band members’ story in 1997 to a documentarian, 20 years after their heyday of No. 1 singles and stadium tours (more information about the documentary is revealed before the end of the season).
It charts the two paths that led to the band’s creation: Daisy Jones’ (Riley Keough, « The Girlfriend Experience »), a singer-songwriter in Los Angeles, and Billy Dunne’s (Sam Claflin, « The Hunger Games: Catching Fire »), the lead singer of a little band that could from Pittsburgh. Billy’s band and Daisy’s solo act struggle and scrape by, but when a music producer (Tom Wright) puts them together, they become hugely popular, virtually overnight, even as drama bubbles behind the scenes.
How to watch:’Daisy Jones & The Six’
Billy is married to Camila (Camila Morrone), a hometown girl who followed him to LA and is raising their daughter. But from the moment they share a microphone, Billy and Daisy make moon eyes at each other. Meanwhile, keyboardist Karen (Suki Waterhouse) and guitarist Graham (Will Harrison), Billy’s brother, have their own rocky relationship, and bassist Eddie (Josh Whitehouse) feels pushed to the background.
No one is helped by the vices of rock legends – too much alcohol, drugs and sex. (The band’s drummer Warren, played by Sebastian Chacon, exists blissfully drama-free in the series, and is a carefree delight.)
I haven’t read Reid’s book, so it’s hard to tell if Amazon’s series is a surface-level adaptation or is working from shallow source material. But it’s impossible to connect with any of these characters because every move and emotional beat feels contrived. Take Billy: Claflin has jawbones that could cut glass and a mop of brown hair (a wig) constantly falling into his clear, sparkling eyes, but he lacks the musical chops or ineffable magnetism of a ’70s rock god. It’s impossible to believe that Billy could be one and bring an entire band with him.
More:Taylor Jenkins Reid’s ‘Carrie Soto Is Back’ is a perfectly timed ode to Serena Williams
« Daisy » aims for an epic love triangle that is meant to pull heartstrings along with guitar strings, but to be successful that would require chemistry, heat and stakes behind it. Try as the writers might, they can’t make you care about Billy or Camila or even Daisy enough to win emotional attachment for their romantic ventures. Camila is an afterthought who exists primarily as an impediment to Billy’s musical and sexual goals. And she’s not the only woman shoehorned into the story: Supporting character Simone (Nabiyah Be) flits in and out as a Black disco singer (and Daisy’s onetime roommate) who seems to appear because the producers feared the show was too white.
Keough, with some billowy Stevie Nicks cosplay and a red wig, is at least very well cast as Daisy, delivering on her promise whether she’s screaming at Billy or singing into a microphone. And she can really sing too, which one would expect of Elvis Presley’s granddaughter.  But her brassy alto has a twang which, combined with lovelorn lyrics and strummy melodies, gives the songs a country flavor that is dissonant with the rock genre the band is trying to emulate. The music – and there is a whole album’s worth of original songs – is fun if lacking depth, like everything else in the series.
Try as it might, « Daisy » can’t create an evocative story out of nostalgia, electric guitars and pretty people.

"Crossover voting" in primaries in Wyoming is about to become more difficult

0

Switching political parties to choose the primary in which to vote is a Wyoming tradition that’s been under more scrutiny recently.
Switching political parties in order to choose the primary in which a voter wants to cast a ballot is an old Wyoming tradition, one that has faced growing scrutiny as Democrats in the state continue struggle to field competitive candidates, and Republican primaries often all but decide who eventually wins office.
At least some Democrats in this GOP-dominated state haven’t been shy about changing party affiliation just to vote in Republican primaries, including the blockbuster U.S. House race last year that saw Rep. Liz Cheney defeated by Cheyenne attorney Harriet Hageman.
Amid GOP grumbling about « crossover voting, » switching parties ahead of primaries in Wyoming is about to become far more difficult. Republican Gov. Mark Gordon allowed a bill curtailing the practice to take effect Friday without his signature.
The bill has flaws that may confuse voters but they aren’t serious enough to warrant a veto, Gordon said in a letter to lawmakers.
But Republicans’ overwhelming voter registration advantage in Wyoming stands to make the law’s changes « more academic than real, » Gordon wrote.
« I urge voters to learn about these changes, » he wrote.
Wyoming voters had been able to register to vote and declare party affiliation at the polls or up to two weeks before primary day. The new law prohibits changing party affiliation for almost three months before primary day in August.
Crossover voting in Wyoming drew renewed attention ahead of the 2022 primary as former President Donald Trump and his allies sought to discourage the state’s dwindling number of Democrats from voting for Cheney as she courted their votes.
« It makes total sense that only Democrats vote in the Democrat primary and only Republicans vote in the Republican primary, » Trump said in a statement endorsing a similar bill last year that failed.
Access to voting in primaries varies widely across the country, ranging from 20 states where any voter may choose candidates from any party to nine states where only voters registered with a party can vote for that party’s candidates. The rest fall in between with a variety of rules, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
In Wyoming, Trump’s concerns about the Cheney race turned out to be overblown. Cheney, who stoked Trump’s ire by voting to impeach him for the , violence at the U.S. Capitol and by leading the House investigation into the insurrection, lost by 37 points, enough that even all the Democrats in Wyoming couldn’t have helped her win.
Wyoming secretary of state figures suggest crossover voting occurred. Democratic registration fell from about 46,000 in January 2022, to 36,000 on primary day, Aug. 16, bottoming out post-primary at 30,000 in September — a modern-day low.
Republican registration, meanwhile, climbed from about 196,000 in January 2022, to 215,000 on primary day and 235,000 in September. Republican registration previously peaked at 209,000 after the 2020 election.
Cheney’s losing margin of almost 64,000 votes, however, far exceeded Wyoming’s Democratic registration at any given time in the past decade.
Fears among Wyoming Republicans have nevertheless been growing that Democrats in disguise are watering down conservative values among leading GOP candidates at all levels.
Crossover voting has « undermined the sanctity of Wyoming’s primary process, » Republican Secretary of State Chuck Gray said in a statement after the bill cleared the House.
A former state legislator, Gray ran for the state’s top election oversight job last year on the debunked claim that widespread voter fraud cost Trump the 2020 election. Gray won a three-way GOP primary with 44%.
The Wyoming Republican Party, which censured Cheney for opposing Trump and voted to no longer recognize her as a Republican, has supported the change as a top priority.
« Political parties should be able to select their own candidates free of interference and manipulation by outside entities, » a state party resolution stated last fall.
The bill had far from unanimous support, however, even in a Wyoming Legislature more dominated by Republicans than at any time since 1920. Just seven of 93 state legislators are Democrats.
At one point, the bill failed on a 3-1 committee vote but was resurrected under a rule allowing reconsideration by the Senate, which passed the bill 19-11 on Feb. 24. Opponents included the chamber’s two Democrats and several Republicans who said GOP dominance in Wyoming is already almost absolute.
« By all accounts, we are becoming more polarized. And when you become more polarized, you want absolute control. That’s what this bill does, » Republican Sen. Cale Case said in debate on the Senate floor.
Case sought to change the bill to reduce the blackout period for changing parties to 45 days before the primary. His proposal failed and the bill as passed would have barred party registration changes after the candidate filing deadline on the last Friday in May until primary day for both parties on the third Tuesday in August.
Some lawmakers pointed out that other states, such as New York, have more restrictive party registration rules than Wyoming.
« We’re making it sound like we’re just going to be this draconian island in the middle of this country that has this horrible closed primary system. And that’s not the case. We’re still relatively an open primary state, » Republican Sen. Bo Biteman said.
Before last year, Republican mega-donor Foster Friess claimed after his unsuccessful run for Wyoming governor in 2018 that he could have won if Democrats hadn’t switched to vote for Gordon. Some observers, including University of Wyoming data analyst Brian Harnisch, doubted the claim and the issue has faded as a major concern in the governor’s race.
Gordon received 59% in a four-way Republican primary last year and won a second term with 76% of the vote.

Calls to boycott Walgreens grow as pharmacy confirms it will not sell abortion pills in 20 states, including some where it remains legal

0

Walgreens confirmed it will not sell abortion pills in the 20 states represented by the attorneys general that informed the pharmacy it could be breaking laws if it distributed the pills.
Walgreens confirmed Thursday that it will not carry abortion pills in several states, including some in which the pills are still legal.
The phrases « Walgreens » and « #BoycottWalgreens » each trended on Twitter Thursday night into Friday morning as discussion ensued and some users vowed to stop supporting the chain.
The decision, first reported by Politico on Thursday, comes after 20 Republican attorneys general last month wrote to Walgreens and several other pharmacies including CVS, Walmart, and Costco to point out laws that could be violated if the companies provided abortion pills through the mail.
Walgreens told Politico that it has responded to the states represented by the 20 AGs, and said it will not distribute the abortion pill Mifepristone in any of those states. That group includes Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, and Montana, where the procedure and medications for abortions are largely still legal, Politico reported.
The FDA announced in January that retail pharmacies would be allowed to distribute the pills to those with a prescription; the pills previously were only accessible through doctors or mail-order pharmacies. At the time, Walgreens told Insider that it was working to become FDA-certified to sell abortion pills in the states where they are legal.
The company wrote to the 20 attorneys general that it would not dispense the pills in their states, but it has still not publicly confirmed which states the pills may be available in or whether that list is affected by the policy confirmed Thursday.
Some Twitter users voiced their support of the decision from Walgreens, but several high-profile commentators and Democrats voiced their displeasure with the policy.
« Women across the nation will be denied their right to access healthcare they are legally entitled to because of this awful corporate decision, » Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, the highest level elected official in the state where Walgreens is headquartered, tweeted. « @Walgreens must rethink this policy. To all the other pharmacy providers, we’ll stand with you so you can provide this lifesaving care. »
Ron Klain, a longtime aide to President Joe Biden who left his White House role as Biden’s chief of staff earlier this year, cited Walgreen’s slogan in his response: « Their slogan is ‘Trusted since 1901’ — but if @Walgreens won’t fill prescriptions for lawful, needed medicines, where is the « trust » in that? »
« Absolutely awful. This willful corporate choice will prevent so many women from choosing the healthcare they need and have a legal right to, » Sen. Tammy Duckworth, Illinois, tweeted. « @Walgreens should reverse course—immediately. »
Responses to Politico’s Alice Miranda Ollstein’s original tweet announcing the news are also filled with hundreds of users saying they will « no longer be spending any money at Walgreens » or « never step foot in a Walgreens again. »
Mifepristone is currently the subject of multiple lawsuits, with a Texas judge expected to deliver a ruling in the coming weeks on a challenge from Republican attorneys general looking to overturn the FDA’s decades-old approval of the pill. Several Democratic attorneys general filed an argument in the case last month that said banning the pill would lead to an « unprecedented spike » in maternal mortality.
Walgreens did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the public reaction to the policy.

Feinstein, Fetterman Hospitalizations May Mean Trouble for Democrats

Senate Democrats have little room for error after Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) announced she was hospitalized with shingles on Thursday and amid Sen. John Fetterman’s (D-Penn.) ongoing treatment for clinical depression.
On Thursday, Feinstein, 89, said she was hospitalized with the virus and won’t return until “later this month,” while Fetterman, 53, was hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to treat clinical depression last month. It’s not clear when Fetterman will be released.
Two other senators this week missed votes, including Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Ind.) Merkeley said in a statement that he is in Oregon to deal with a “family matter,” while Crapo reportedly is suffering from illness.
Because of absences this week, the Senate is deadlocked at 48–48, forcing Vice President Kamala Harris to cast tie-breaking votes for Democrats. When Crapo and Merkley return, the Senate will be tied at 49–49.
With no time-table provided for either Fetterman’s or Feinstein’s respective returns to the Senate, some analysts say that Democrats could face problems when trying to confirm President Joe Biden’s nominees.
This week, the Senate voted 49–48 in favor of one of Biden’s judicial picks, Margaret Guzman, and also voted 49–48 to confirm Araceli Martinez-Olguin to serve as a federal judge in the Northern District of California.
“Slim majorities are always challenging, but especially so in today’s Senate,” Sarah Binder, political science professor at George Washington University’s Columbian College of Arts and Science, told Newsweek on Thursday. “There are not many legislative measures on tap in the Senate, but Democrats will feel the pinch of a tied Senate whenever they try to confirm a controversial nominee.”
“In those cases, Democrats will need Vice President Harris back in the chair to break a tied vote to cut off debate on a confirmation vote,” Binder added. “That might slightly slow down Democrats and encourage them to focus on nominees who have some support from across the aisle.”
In an interview with Fox News, strategist Doug Heye said that “the danger of having such a small majority is that one or two illnesses can bring things to a halt,” noting the White House “has been aggressive and effective on judicial nominees, but that’s all on hold for now.”Return Not Clear
Feinstein, the oldest member of the Senate, confirmed that “I was diagnosed over the February recess with a case of shingles. I have been hospitalized and am receiving treatment in San Francisco and expect to make a full recovery. I hope to return to the Senate later this month.” Shingles is a viral infection that develops into a rash, lasting for as long as four weeks.
Last month, the longtime Democrat confirmed that she would not be seeking reelection for the seat that she’s held since the early 1990s. Several Democrat lawmakers, including Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Katie Porter (D-Calif.), have announced bids for her seat.
As for Fetterman, a timeline for return even less clear. Days before he was hospitalized for depression, Fetterman sought medical attention after feeling lightheaded—coming just months after he suffered a stroke while on the campaign trail.
On Monday, Fetterman spokesman Joe Calvello issued a statement saying he is on a “path to recovery.”
“We don’t have a lot to update folks with since there’s no real news to report except that John is doing well, working with the wonderful doctors, and remains on a path to recovery,” he said. “He is visiting with staff and family daily, and his staff are keeping him updated on Senate business and news.”
“We understand the intense interest in John’s status and especially appreciate the flood of well-wishes. However, as we have said this will be a weeks-long process and while we will be sure to keep folks updated as it progresses, this is all there is to give by way of an update,” Calvello added.
Before his latest stay in the hospital, Fetterman voted in the Senate to confirm three judicial nominees, including Gina R. Méndez-Miró of Puerto Rico to be a U.S. District Judge for the District of Puerto Rico; Lindsay C. Jenkins of Illinois to be a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois; and Matthew L. Garcia of New Mexico to be a U.S. District Judge for the District of New Mexico.

Bing chat gets smarter with tones, turn counters, and more engaging responses

0

Microsoft has made three key changes to Bing chat that makes it even more accurate
Microsoft’s AI-powered Bing chat is getting even smarter. The company just outlined four changes to the experience themed towards chat tones, turn counters, page content, and chat behaviors that should improve your day-to-day use of the preview experience if you’re one of the lucky bunch that has been invited to try it out.
Out of all four of the changes, the most significant is chat tones. Microsoft has added a new toggle to change the tone of Bing chat’s AI away from « more precise » to other options like « more creative » or « more balanced ». To let you know which mode you’re in, each of these modes has a different color. Creative is purple, balanced is blue, and precise is green. Microsoft says that « precise » will get you shorter answers, « creative » will generate longer and more descriptive answers, and « balanced » is a mix between the two.
One of the more controversial changes is the turn counter. Microsoft added these last week to prevent Bing chat from getting confused and is still limiting a conversation to six responses. However, you’ll now see a turn counter at the bottom of each response to let you know how the conversation is progressing. When the conversation ends, you’ll see a red stoplight, and you’ll get a warning when it’s close to ending with a yellow stoplight signal.
The final two changes aren’t that significant but are still worth mentioning. For those using the new Microsoft Edge Dev on Windows 11, which integrates with Bing chat, Microsoft has fixed the issue where Bing wasn’t able to recognize the context of a page you’re browsing. Finally, there’s a tweak to chat behavior, where Bing chat should not feel less defensive and adversarial, and more engaging, instead.
This week sees four changes, but more can be coming soon. Microsoft promises that daily incremental improvements are being made to this experience, and will provide updates over on the Microsoft Bing Blogs.

Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon Online Multiplayer Servers Taken Offline

0

Nintendo shuts down the online multiplayer servers for two of its hit games to fix some security issues that have gone unaddressed.
On March 3, Nintendo took down the online multiplayer modes for Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon in order to address some outstanding issues with their servers. The servers for these Nintendo games were not given a timetable for when they would return online at the time of writing.
The news of the online multiplayer servers for Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon comes as the Nintendo eShop clients for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U will cease functioning later this month. On March 27, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U players can no longer access the Nintendo eShop. However players will have until 2024 to transfer leftover funds from 3DS and Wii U to a Nintendo Account, which can be used for Switch titles instead. But, the reason why Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon were taken offline in particular may seem a bit scary for some users.
On Twitter, known dataminer OatmealDome stated that the reason that these two Wii U titles are currently in maintenance was due to a potential exploit that can hijack a user’s console. Dubbed the ENLBufferPwn exploit, this hack can take over the console just by connecting it online to the Mario Kart 8 or Splatoon servers. This exploit was also prevalent in other Nintendo first-party titles, such as Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS, but has been subsequently fixed at the time of writing. However, both Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon for the Wii U have yet to be patched, oddly enough. The maintenance does not extend to other titles at this time.
Nintendo has not posted a definitive time for when these games will have online functionality restored, but the extended maintenance should give players some peace of mind that the problem is being addressed. But, with the 3DS and Wii U losing online functionality by the day, it is only a matter of when the online server for these titles will go dark for the last time. Until then, once the servers for Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon return online, players will have just a little longer to enjoy playing and racing together in those games.
However, players that want to return to Inkopolis on their Switch are in luck. The recent Splatoon 3 Expansion Pass takes players back to the hub city from the first game, which has seen some significant changes since it first debuted in May 2015. Between continued updates to Splatoon 3 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, players that want to keep playing the games they enjoyed online from the Wii U can do so on the Switch in the meantime.
