Google pushed developers to fix security flaws in 275,000 Android apps

NewsHubOver the past two years, Google has pressured developers to patch security issues in more than 275,000 Android apps hosted on its official app store. In many cases this was done under the threat of blocking future updates to the insecure apps.
Since 2014, Google has been scanning apps published on Google Play for known vulnerabilities as part of its App Security Improvement (ASI) program. Whenever a known security issue is found in an application, the developer receives an alert via email and through the Google Play Developer Console.
When it started, the program only scanned apps for embedded Amazon Web Services (AWS) credentials, which was a common problem at the time. The exposure of AWS credentials can lead to serious compromises of the cloud servers used by apps to store user data and content.
Later that year, Google also started scanning for embedded Keystore files. These files typically contain cryptographic keys, both public and private, that are used to encrypt data or secure connections.
In the early days of the ASI program, developers only received notifications, but were under no pressure to do anything. That changed in 2015 when Google expanded the types of issues it scanned for and also started enforcing deadlines for fixing many of them.
The company provides detailed information on the flaws it detects along with guidance on how to fix them. However, developers who fail to resolve the problems within the timeframes provided by Google can lose the ability to release future updates for the affected apps through Google Play.
Google added checks for six new vulnerabilities in 2015, all of them with a patching deadline, and 17 in 2016, 12 of which had a time limit for fixes. These issues ranged from security flaws in third-party libraries, development frameworks and advertising SDKs to insecure implementations of Android Java classes and interfaces.
For example, developers who used the Supersonic SDK in their applications have until January 26 to upgrade the SDK to version 6.3.5 or newer. Older versions of this SDK expose sensitive functions through Javascript that are vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks.
Until April 2016, the Google Play App Security Improvement program helped developers patch 100,000 applications. Since then the number almost tripled, around 90,000 developers patching security issues in over 275,000 apps, said Rahul Mishra, Android security program manager in a blog post Thursday.

У зоні АТО бойовики 19 разів відкривали вогонь по українських позиціях

Як повідомляє прес-центр АТО, на Маріупольському напрямку з гранатометів та стрілецької зброї бойовики обстрілювали Гнутове, Водяне та Широкине.
На Донецькому з тих же видів озброєння вели вогонь по Авдіївці, Луганському та Зайцевому.
На Луганському напрямку терористи застосували 120 міліметрові міномети, неодноразово обстрілюючи Кримське, а з гранатометів – Новозванівку.
У штабі також зауважили, що втрат серед українських військових немає.
Нагадаємо, протягом дня 19 січня бойовики 11 разів обстріляли позиції ЗСУ.

Как сообщает пресс-центр АТО, на Мариупольском направлении из гранатометов и стрелкового оружия боевики обстреливали Гнутово, Водяное и Широкино.

NewsHubEin Mann ist in der australischen Stadt Melbourne mit seinem Auto in eine Menschenmenge gefahren und hat drei Menschen getötet. Mindestens 20 weitere wurden verletzt, wie ein Polizeisprecher am Freitag mitteilte. Der Täter sei festgenommen worden.
Er war den Angaben zufolge am frühen Nachmittag (Ortszeit) im zentralen Geschäftsviertel der Millionenmetropole absichtlich auf den Fußweg gefahren. Es gebe aber keinen terroristischen Hintergrund und es bestehe keine Bedrohung mehr. Die Polizei ging demnach von einem Zusammenhang mit einer früheren Messerstecherei aus.
Örtliche Medien berichteten, die Polizei habe auf den Fahrer geschossen. Dieser habe nur eine rote Unterhose und weiße Schuhe getragen. Auf einem Video war im Internet zu sehen, wie ein rotes Auto an einer Kreuzung mehrmals im Kreis fuhr und zwei Männer versuchten, es aufzuhalten. Bilder in sozialen Netzwerken zeigten Sanitäter, die auf der Straße liegende Menschen behandelten, und Polizisten, die das Wrack des Autos umstellt hatten.

8 Survivors Found in Rubble of Italy Hotel Buried by Avalanche: Reports

NewsHubEight people have been found alive in the rubble of an Italy hotel that collapsed after being buried by an avalanche on Wednesday, according to local media reports.
Hotel Rigopiano on the Gran Sasso mountain was buried under snow following Wednesday’s multiple earthquakes in the region.
The eight who are were found alive under the rubble are three men, three women and two children, according to the reports. It’s unclear how many have already been extracted from the rubble, though a woman and a child extracted alive are already on their way to the hospital via helicopter, local news agency ANSA reported.
It is thought that these people have been under the rubble since about 5 or 6 p.m. local time Wednesday.
Four people have been found dead at the hotel site so far. According to unconfirmed reports, up to 37 people may have been at the hotel when it was submerged under the snow and rubble.
Two other people were rescued on Thursday, but the heavy snow made initial rescue operations difficult. Weather conditions have since improved.

Untitled Buena Vista Social Club Documentary Pulled From Sundance Lineup

NewsHubThe Untitled Buena Vista Social Club Documentary will not to premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival , robbing the mountainside indie film gathering of one of its higher-profile debuts. Broad Green, the film’s distributor, attributed the last minute decision to pull the film to the need to make more post-production tweaks. It was originally slated to have its first public screenings on Friday, but Festival organizers said that they were informed Thursday that the picture would not be shown.
“We at Broad Green are disappointed that we will not be able to premiere this compelling documentary at this year’s Sundance Film Festival,” a spokesperson for Broad Green said in a statement. “The film’s post production process has taken longer than expected and thus the decision was made to wait to introduce the film to audiences until it can be presented in its best possible iteration.”

The film is a sequel of sorts to 1999’s “The Buena Vista Social Club.” It also examines Cuba’s musical scene. Lucy Walker (“The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom”) directs the film, taking over for Wim Wenders, the filmmaker behind the original.
Broad Green, a relative newcomer to the indie world, has struggled in its initial years. The studio scored with “A Walk in the Woods,” a 2015 Sundance release, but struck out on the likes of “The Infiltrator,” “Bad Santa 2,” and “99 Homes.”
Screenings of the musical documentary will be replaced by other films in the lineup, festival organizers said.
