‘Uber for logistics’ startup Lalamove raises $30M to expand beyond 100 cities in Asia

0

NewsHubLalamove, a Hong Kong-based logistics on-demand service, has closed a $30 million Series B as it begins to consider a public listing.
The company, which was founded as EasyVan three years ago, is currently present in 50 cities in China and five cities across Southeast Asia. It plans to use this new capital to expand to 60 more cities in China and Asia by the end of 2017.
This round takes the company past $60 million raised from investors. The Series B was led by Beijing-based Xianghe Capital, a new VC firm founded by Baidu’s former head of M&A Hesong Tang. New investor Blackhole Capital participated alongside existing Lalamove backers MindWorks Ventures and Crystal Stream.
In an interview with TechCrunch, Blake Larson, Managing Director for International at Lalamove, said the company is close to reaching profitability.
“This round definitely puts us in a very strong position to grow the business while it isn’t easy to raise now, especially in the on-demand space. Already, several of our cities are profitable, we are cash flow positive and we will be profitable by end of the year,” Larson said,
“We now have enough money that we don’t need to raise again, but that doesn’t necessary mean we won’t. We know we have a model that works [so] it’s not a matter of if we can list but when,” he added. “There’s no line in the sand, but we’re in a financial position that we could list in two or two and a half years.”
Larson didn’t say anything further about a future IPO, such as the location that Lalamove might choose.
Lalamove is one of a series of logistics companies that take their cues from on-demand transport services like Uber. Unlike Uber, however, their customers are predominantly business users, who spend more and do so regularly. But essentially anyone can use the app to move goods — food, shopping and office supplies are popular — using its fleet of motorbikes and vans.
“Logistics is a big market – a USD 1.7 trillion market in China – and it accounts for up to 27 percent of GDP for some countries in Southeast Asia; it is underpenetrated by mobile internet,” Lalamove founder and CEO Shing Chow said in a statement. “Our users have said they want faster and simpler ways to send things in their cities and we have proven that we can help them deliver anything in less than an hour.”
Most of its business is in China, but overall Lalamove claims to have 500,000 drivers on its platform, with five million registered customers and 15 million deliveries completed to date. Uber tried something similar in Hong Kong two years , but its Uber Cargo service was stopped last year.
While there’s much speculation over whether Uber and its Chinese rival Didi Chuxing, which is buying Uber’s China business , might go public in the next few years, most pundits are united in the belief that neither ride-sharing businesses is at the point of profitability yet.
However, Lalamove, which Larson said is one of the few remaining players in its space thanks to a challenging fundraising climate, is on of course to realize its first profit this year. That’s down to the kind of customers it targets, and their reliance on service quality ahead of price.
“Our operations may be very similar [to Uber] at a high level, but when you go after a consumer market there’s a very low switching cost. Customer loyalty is harder to maintain,” he explained.
“When [like Lalamove] most of your customers are businesses, they don’t want to change even if there is a short-term cash bonus in doing so. That doesn’t mean they aren’t sensitive to promotions, but that isn’t the driving force.”
Last year, Lalamove inked a deal with Line to powers the chat app’s on-demand services , initially in Bangkok, which is one of Line’s largest markets. Larson said that already the Line Man service has overtaken Rocket Internet’s FoodPanda, which had a four-year headstart, on delivery volumes. He said that the company is investigating similar partnership potential with other services in Southeast Asia in the future.
“It may not be another chat app, but there are lots of platform that we’ll look at doing things with, for example social commerce services. [We can help] large platforms that don’t have the operational side,” Larson said.

FIFA agrees to expand World Cup to 48 teams as of 2026

0

NewsHubFIFA’s decision making body, the FIFA Council, also decided that the format would consist of 16 groups of three teams in the group stage.
« The FIFA Council unanimously decided on a 48-team World Cup as of 2026: 16 groups of 3 teams. Details to follow after the meeting, » FIFA said on its Twitter feed.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who replaced the disgraced Sepp Blatter in February, had made World Cup expansion one of his promises during his successful electoral campaign.
Infantino had initially suggested a 40-team tournament but then added another eight to that total in October.
In making the decision, FIFA brushed aside concerns that the expansion would lower the overall standard of the tournament, and make it too long and unwieldy.
Critics, including the powerful European clubs as well as some leading coaches, have said that FIFA is tampering with a winning formula.
The last World Cup in Brazil was widely regarded as one of the best in the competition’s 87-year-old history, featuring shock results, last minute drama and outstanding individual performances.

Three things to watch in Jeff Sessions' confirmation hearing

0

NewsHubOn Tuesday, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. , will face the Senate Judiciary Committee and answer questions from his colleagues, who will play a key role in deciding whether to confirm his nomination to be the nation’s top law enforcement officer.
Cabinet confirmation hearings: What to expect this week
The attorney general is in charge of the Department of Justice and its components — the FBI, DEA, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Bureau of Prisons, Office of Justice Programs, and the U. S. Attorneys and U. S. Marshals Service.
It won’t be the first time Sessions has worked at the Justice Department, should he be confirmed. He served for two years as assistant U. S. attorney for the Southern District of Alabama, and then as U. S. attorney for Alabama’s Southern District for 12 years after President Reagan nominated him in 1981.
As attorney general, Sessions would face a daunting portfolio of controversy and criminal activity. Almost every intractable national problem passes across the attorney general’s desk in some form.
Here are three issues likely to come up in his confirmation hearing — and repeatedly during his tenure.
Last year was Chicago’s bloodiest year in two decade with 762 murders. Is the spike in crime because cops are holding back? Jericka Duncan report…
The division is expected to release its long-awaited report on the practices of the Chicago police department later this week. An investigation was announced in December 2015 to examine whether the Chicago police routinely engage in a pattern or practice of discriminatory or unconstitutional policing.
Sessions will certainly face questions from the committee about how he would handle the problems identified in Chicago, as well as the five other police department investigations that remain open – in Baltimore, Ville Platte (Louisiana), Evangeline Parish (Louisiana), and Orange County, California.
“Building trust between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve is one of my highest priorities as attorney general,” Attorney General Loretta Lynch said as she announced the Chicago investigation.
But some have questioned whether the Obama Justice Department has been too aggressive in going after police departments.
The Fraternal Order of Police, the nation’s largest law enforcement group, enthusiastically endorsed Sessions’ nomination.
“We are very, very pleased with the decision of President-elect Trump to tap Senator Sessions to be our nation’s next ‘top cop,’” the group said in a statement. The group’s president, Chuck Canterbury, is slated to testify in support of Session’s nomination. Both men are expected to face questions about the future of federal police reform.
One of the most enduring themes of Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign was his opposition to illegal immigration. In Sessions, he’s found one of the most consistent supporters of hard-line immigration enforcement.
Sessions led the opposition against the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007, as well as the 2013 “Gang of Eight” bill. He has also been a leading opponent of Mr. Obama’s use of executive action to push immigration reform.
“’Immigration reform” may be the single most abused phrase in the English language,” Sessions opined in the “Immigration Handbook” he authored for Republicans in Congress in 2015. “It has become a legislative honorific almost exclusively reserved for proposals which benefit everyone but actual American citizens.”
In the 25-page memo, he offered his analysis of immigration reform in Washington.
“The only ‘immigration reforms’ discussed in Washington are those pushed by interest groups who want to remove what few immigration controls are left in order to expand the record labor supply even further,” he complained.
The responsibility for enforcing immigration laws actually rests with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), but the Justice Department oversees immigration courts. As attorney general, Sessions would have a significant role in deciding how those courts operate and how aggressively to pursue criminal action against illegal immigrants.
Sessions is likely going to face questions – from both sides of the aisle – about how he plans to use the office of attorney general to implement his vision for immigration enforcement.
Marijuana, which is legal in 26 states and the District of Columbia, is big business, and if Sessions is confirmed as attorney general, he could make things extremely difficult for the burgeoning industry.
Twenty-eight states have now legalized either medical or recreational marijuana. But Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, Donald Trump’s nominee to run th…
Like outgoing Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Sessions opposes marijuana legalization. He said at a hearing last year that it’s “a very real danger.”
Marijuana remains illegal at the federal level, but the Justice Department has considerable influence over how those laws are enforced.
Under the Obama administration, the Justice Department took two significant steps towards a more relaxed enforcement of marijuana laws.
In 2013, then Deputy Attorney General James Cole issued a memo urging federal prosecutors to use limited investigative and prosecutorial resources to focus on the distribution of marijuana and not on individuals. The so-called “Cole Memo” represented a significant shift in the approach to prosecuting marijuana violations.
The next year, he issued another memo aimed at alleviating concerns that banks would be prosecuted for doing business with legal cannabis business.
As attorney general, Sessions could reverse both of these initiatives, opt to enforce the federal drug laws fully and not be lenient on banks doing transactions with marijuana businesses.
While the attorney general has very little influence over state policy, the Justice Department’s policy priorities can make life very difficult for legal cannabis dealers.
The marijuana industry has been tepid in its response to Sessions. The National Cannabis Industry Association issued a statement in response to his nomination, saying it hoped to work together.
“Voters in 28 states have chosen programs that shift cannabis from the criminal market to highly regulated, tax-paying businesses,” the statement read. “Senator Sessions has long advocated for state sovereignty, and we look forward to working with him to ensure that states’ rights and voter choices on cannabis are respected.”
Sessions’ nomination hearing is expected to take place over two days — Tuesday and Wednesday.

Yahoo to Re-Brand and Slash the Size of its Board After Closing it’s Deal with Verizon Communications

NewsHubSunnyvale-based internet firm, Yahoo Inc., last year faced a number of problems/scandals; having multiple hacks into their systems, secretly scanned US Authorities emails, slashing 10% of its workforce, and also admitted 500 million user accounts had been stolen , making it one of the largest security breaches ever, and so forth.
June 10th, 2016, saw the company auctioning off about 3,000 patents and hired boutique investment bank Black Stone, to oversee the sale. The following month, New York-based broadband telecom company; Verizon Communications Inc. said it was buying Yahoo for $4.8 billion. However, following it’s scandal of 500 million yahoo accounts being stolen, Verizon demanded for $1 billion discount on the deal, or the deal was off. No further reports was had from the two companies.
According to Associated Press , if the proposed $4.8 billion sale of its digital services to Verizon Communications Inc. goes through, Yahoo will adopt a new corporate identity; changing its name to Altaba Inc. and slash the size of its board. All this is proposed to happen after Yahoo turns over its email, websites, mobile apps and advertising tools to Verizon.
Associated Press reports that the new name is meant to reflect Yahoo’s transformation into a holding company for investments in China’s e-commerce leader, Alibaba Group, and Yahoo Japan that are worth about more than $40 billion combined.
If the Verizon deal closes, CEO; Marissa Mayer, Co-Founder; David Filo, Former Director, now the Chairman Emeritus; Maynard Webb, Eddy Hartenstein, Richard Hill and Jane Shaw who are currently on the Yahoo’s 11-member board will resign. Verizon is expected to retain Yahoo’s brand under its ownership.

Gamestop hints that Pokemon will come to the Nintendo Switch

0

NewsHubRumors have been circling for a while, but a new description of the Nintendo Switch on retailer GameStop’s website suggests that a Pokémon game will be coming to the Nintendo Switch console.
Spotted by a NeoGAF user, the description of the console on the GameStop website read “Nintendo Switch games will include new title offerings from Mario, Splatoon, Zelda, the NBA and more! You will even be able to play Skyrim on the go, or Pokémon at home with the Nintendo Switch.”
Interestingly, this section of the listing has now been removed. Whether that means it was an accidental leak or fixing the mistake of an overzealous copywriter is unclear.
Since the days of Red and Blue, Pokémon has been a handheld-first franchise. Though we got the chance to play titles such as Pokémon Stadium on the big screen, Game Freak never took the mainline games down this route.
The idea of a Pokémon game coming to the Nintendo Switch was first floated around in November after Eurogamer reported that multiple sources were claiming the Switch game had been developed alongside Sun and Moon.
It’s suspected that the game will be a director’s cut of Sun and Moon titled Pokémon Stars.
Nintendo hasn’t commented on the rumors, but we might not have to wait long to find out since Nintendo’s big Switch event on January 12 is fast approaching.
In a Treehouse Livestream following the main press conference , Nintendo has said we’ll get the chance to see more about the games that will be available on the Switch console, one of which could very well be this mysterious Pokémon game.
