LANDOVER, Md.—Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday “we’re going to win this game.” Sunday vs. Washington, the Cowboys did. But a game that looked decisive early came down to the wire thanks to a Cowboys offense that continues to lack rhythm, even against a Washington unit without four defensive linemen due to injury and COVID-19. Defensive end Randy Gregory strip-sacked Washington quarterback Kyle Allen with 2:34 to seal the game. The Cowboys escaped with a 27-20 victory. For much of the game, the Cowboys carried a comfortable lead thanks largely to a frenetic defensive performance. In the first quarter, Gregory and tipped and snagged an interception while linebacker Micah Parsons had sacked Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke and forced a fumble that Dallas returned for a touchdown. Parsons notched a second sack before halftime—the 12th of his rookie season. The Cowboys offense, meanwhile, struggled mightily. Sure, Dallas’ final score looked respectable.
