10 volleyball players to watch in UAAP Season 79

0

NewsHubThe 10 volleyball players to watch in UAAP Season 79. INQUIRER.net FILE PHOTOS/TRISTAN TAMAYO
As the 79th season of UAAP volleyball opens on Saturday, fans of the sport will be missing a few names.
Among them are superstars Alyssa Valdez, Ara Galang and Mika Reyes.
But the opening of a new season will also give rising stars a chance to step out of the shadows of these more popular players.
Whether as the most vital cogs in their squads or as the biggest threat to the opposing teams or as the new crowd darlings, these are the 10 volleyball players to watch this season:
10. Shaya Adorador, UE Lady Warriors
UE opposite spiker Shaya Adorador. TRISTAN TAMAYO/INQUIRER.net
UE finally snapped a four-year losing streak when it won against Adamson in its final game last season. Senior Shaya Adorador was hugely responsible for that victory.
READ: Adorador back as Lady Warriors’ captain for UAAP Season 79
Adorador, who chose to stay in UE despite being recruited by schools with better programs, is probably the best player to don the Lady Warrior jersey since the graduation of Suzanne Roces. She has shown flashes of brilliance even in her stint with Generika Lifesaver in the Philippine SuperLiga, but does she have enough firepower—and more importantly, the maturity—to tow UE to more than just one win this season?
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH HER: Adorador’s high leaping ability and powerful serves are some of her strongest weapons.
9. Jema Galanza, Adamson Lady Falcons
Adamson open spiker Jema Galanza. TRISTAN TAMAYO/INQUIRER.net
The Lady Falcons are going into this season as underdogs minus starters Mylene Paat, Fhen Emnas and Erika Alkuino. The responsibility to carry the cudgels for the team now falls on the shoulders of Jema Galanza.
READ: Lady Falcons set to soar under new coach
While she is recognized as a powerful hitter, Galanza had the luxury of sharing the responsibility with the likes of Paat, Bang Pineda and Amanda Villanueva before. Now, aside from being expected to deliver the points for the team, she will also be relied on to guide her young teammates. Will she deliver or will the pressure of doing all these things get to her?
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH HER: Galanza is a looker who packs a mean wallop. Do not be deceived.
8. Dawn Macandili, DLSU Lady Spikers
DLSU libero Dawn Macandili. TRISTAN TAMAYO/INQUIRER.net
Dawn Macandili had a fairy tale 2016. Aside from winning the championship for DLSU, she was also named as the Most Valuable Player in the All-Filipino conference of the Philippine SuperLiga, the first libero to notch the highest plum in the tournament.
READ: All-Filipino MVP Macandili dedicates trophy to all liberos
Armed with agility and the most precise reflexes, Macandili deserves all the accolades she has been getting. She, however, is going into the season without her backcourt partners in Ara Galang and Cyd Demecillio who have both graduated. The expectations for her to deliver are higher than ever.
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH HER: No questions asked, she is the best libero in the collegiate scene.
7. Isa Molde, UP Lady Maroons
UP open spiker Isa Molde. Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net
Coach Gerry Yee and the Lady Maroons had a recruitment coup last season with the likes of Tots Carlos and Justine Dorog. But Isa Molde shone the brightest not just among her neophyte teammates, but also among a solid crop of rookies in the entire tournament.
READ: Top rookie Molde not looking too far ahead, vows to fight harder for UP
Named as the Rookie of the Year last season, Molde has turned many heads not just because of her physical features, but also because of her skills. She is a two-way player who can do damage on both her offense and floor defense.
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH HER: People have been wary of the so-called sophomore jinx. Will this affect Molde? Her and UP’s fans hope not.
6. Bernadette Pons, FEU Lady Tamaraws
FEU’s Bernadette Pons. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net
The Lady Tamaraws have been relatively quiet in the offseason. Aside from seeing her team drop to fourth place in the V-League Collegiate Conference, Bernadette Pons also suited up for the Petron Blaze Spikers in the Philippine Super Liga.
READ: UAAP Volleyball Preview: Lady Tamaraws eye Finals berth
Despite being one of the youngest players in that team, Pons shone the brightest, often eclipsing the performance of more senior teammates Aiza Maizo and Frances Molina. Pons hopes to carry that deadly performance in the UAAP to help FEU do better than its third-place finish last season.
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH HER: Despite her small frame, Pons has an explosive takeoff. She is deadliest in combination plays.
5. Jhoana Maraguinot, Ateneo Lady Eagles
Ateneo’s Jhoana Maraguinot. Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net
Now that the era of Alyssa Valdez has ended for the Lady Eagles, will it be the time of Jhoana Maraguinot?
READ: Ateneo has no ‘Queen Eagle’
The Batangas native is undoubtedly a talented spiker with unrivaled hops and the capacity to provide for her team. But just like the other skilled players in the squad, Maraguinot will be playing without Valdez to bail them out if things do not go their way. Good for her and their fans, she still has teammates Julia Morado, Bea de Leon and Mitch Morente to show the league that they are just as lethal.
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH HER: Maraguinot is a flashy player who can hit hard just as any player in the league. In what is considered her time to shine, will she step up or clam up?
4. EJ Laure, UST Golden Tigresses
UST’s EJ Laure. Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net
Two years ago, Ennajie Laure was the most recruited player out of high school. Despite tempting offers from other squads, she chose to stay in UST and subsequently earned the moniker as “The Phoenix,” the great hope of the flailing UST volleyball program.
READ: UAAP Volleyball Preview: Tigresses targeting Final 4 return
Two years since her recruitment, the Golden Tigresses have yet to break their four-year absence from the Final Four. After an inconsistent sophomore year, Laure is once again tipped to lead her squad as one of the favorites this season.
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH HER: Laure is among the collegiate players who gained valuable experience in the off-season. She has shown flashes of brilliance, sometimes even outshining imports from other teams. It’s just a matter of consistency.
3. Cherry Rondina, UST Golden Tigresses
UST’s Cherry Rondina. INQUIRER FILE PHOTO
Cherry Bomb. Cherry on Top. Rondinapapagod.
Hers is a name that has inspired a number of monikers. And why not, when despite her very small frame, Cherry Rondina has emerged as one of the most explosive spikers in the league.
READ: ‘Shocked’ Rondina ready to lead UST as captain
The queen of the UAAP beach volleyball, Rondina hopes to translate her success on the sand to the indoor courts. Together with Laure, she will form one of the deadliest one-two punches in the league, which their fans hope could bring UST back on top.
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH HER: Rondina’s energy is infectious. But it can also go two different ways—either inspire her and her teammates or distract her from her game. She still needs to learn how to rein in at times.
2. Kim Fajardo, DLSU Lady Spikers
DLSU’s Kim Fajardo. Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net
Fans of the Lady Spikers heaved a huge sigh of relief when Kim Fajardo decided to use her last playing year and understandably so because aside from her impeccable setting, Fajardo brings so much more to the court.
READ: La Salle stays upbeat despite exit of stars
She was a woman on a mission last year. And there’s a good reason for those who want to take the crown from La Salle to believe that she is far from done this season, especially with the valuable experience she gained as the primary setter of the Philippine team in the Women’s Club World Championship in 2016.
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH HER: Players like Fajardo and her fiercest rival Julia Morado make people appreciate the setter position more. Fajardo brings more to the table than her playmaking skills—she once outscored Alyssa Valdez last season.
1. Jaja Santiago, NU Lady Bulldogs
National University’s Jaja Santiago. Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.net
With her tall frame and power, Jaja Santiago is a behemoth who draws collective oohs and aahs from her fans and even the supporters of opposing teams.
READ: Jaja piques interest of Japan head coach Yamada
After leading NU and the Foton Lady Tornadoes to different titles in the V-League and the Philippine SuperLiga, and also headlining the Philippine squads that saw action in the Asian Volleyball Championship and the Women’s Club World Championship, Santiago is coming into the tournament as the heavy favorite to notch the MVP plum won by Valdez in the last three years.
She has been used to playing with older sister Dindin and against Valdez, who were two more established players. But now that they have moved on, no one is stopping Santiago from standing head and shoulders above the rest of the league.
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD WATCH HER: Given the right set—now highly possible, thanks to her connection with Jasmine Nabor—Santiago is unstoppable. She is a dominant force whether in the middle or in the wings.

Rangers Snap Two-Game Skid With Win Over Sabres, Thanks To Kreider OT Goal

0

NewsHubBUFFALO, N. Y. (AP) — Chris Kreider scored 3:56 into overtime and the New York Rangers beat the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 Thursday night to snap a two-game losing streak.
Mats Zuccarello scored in regulation and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 36 shot, including two in the extra period, for the Rangers. J. T. Miller had assists on both goals to help New York get its league-leading 18th road win, including 11th in the last 13.
On the winning goal, Kreider took a pass from Miller and buried a wrist shot from the right circle for his 20th of the season.
Cody Franson scored and Robin Lehner stopped 42 shots for Buffalo, which has lost three straight.
Buffalo had beaten New York in two earlier meetings this season and was trying for its first sweep of the Rangers since the 2006-07 season.
Franson got the tying goal for Buffalo with 5:31 remaining in the third period. Franson gathered a loose puck in the high slot and beat Lundqvist with a wrist shot for his third of the season.
Zuccarello scored his 10th on a power play to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead with 2:10 left in the second. Positioned in front of the net, Zuccarello lifted his stick to deflect Ryan McDonagh’s slap shot from the point. The puck floated over Lehner’s shoulder and bounced in off the crossbar.
New York had scored on just one of its previous 18 power plays before Zuccarello’s goal.
The scoreless first period was full of scoring chances. Lehner made 14 saves and Lundqvist had 12 shots _ including four on Buffalo’s two power plays.
NOTES: Sabres D Zach Bogosian left the game late in the first period with a mid-body injury and did not return. — New York’s Alain Vigneault coached in his 1,103rd game, passing Billy Reay for 17th on the NHL’s all-time list. — Buffalo placed C Cal O’Reilly on waivers Thursday. Nicolas Deslauriers, a healthy scratch the previous two games, took his place on the fourth line. — Zuccarello has 19 points in his last 18 games. — Miller leads the Rangers with a point in 29 games this season.

Kellyanne Conway made up a fake terrorist attack to justify Trump’s 'Muslim ban'

0

NewsHubIn an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews that aired on Thursday night, Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway managed to get two huge things wrong in a short, 19-second answer. First, she said that the Obama administration banned Iraqi refugees from entering in the United States for six months in 2011 — which is flatly untrue.
Second, and more significantly, she made up a terrorist attack committed by Iraqi refugees that never happened — the «Bowling Green Massacre»:
Joe Sonka is, to be clear, 100 percent correct about this. There has never been a terrorist attack in Bowling Green, Kentucky committed by Iraqi refugees.
Conway claims that «most people don’t know that because it didn’t get covered. » Most people don’t know about it because it didn’t happen.
In 2011, two Iraqi refugees, Waad Ramadan Alwan and Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, were arrested in Bowling Green, KY, on federal terrorism charges. Allegedly, they had been plotting to send money and weapons back home to Iraqi insurgents.
During the investigation, the FBI found something worrying: fingerprints from Alwan on a roadside bomb in Iraq. This suggested there was a very specific flaw in America’s refugee screening process: Databases of fingerprints from Iraqi militants were not well-integrated into the broader State Department–run refugee admissions process. As a result, the Obama administration initiated a new review of all roughly 57,000 Iraqi refugees who had been recently admitted into the United States.
This process was manpower- and time-intensive, and resulted in a significant slowdown in Iraqi refugee admissions to the United States for six months. But it was not a ban, as Conway, Trump, and many in the conservative media claimed: Refugees from Iraq entered the United States in all six months.
So, to recap:
It is, I suppose, possible that Conway was referring to the other Bowling Green Massacre, which is a local haunted house.

Plex gets Amazon Alexa compatibility

0

NewsHubWhen I want to stream locally stored media to my television, I turn to Plex. The popular service has apps for many devices such as Xbox One and Apple TV — both of which I own. Heck, even my Samsung 4K TV has Plex support built in. Ultimately, the value of the service is found in both its ease of use and cross-platform support.
Never known to stand on its laurels, Plex is constantly improving, and today, it gets a really exciting new feature. Users of the service that are also owners of Amazon Echo or other compatible devices can now leverage the Alexa voice assistant to interact with Plex.
«The Plex Alexa experience begins with a quick setup. First, tell Alexa to enable the Plex skill. Link your account and then ask her to ‘open Plex’ to start using the skill. From there, you can have her ask Plex to play whatever media you like on any of your players. You can ask for suggestions, ‘ask Plex what’s On Deck,’ and more! To learn more about the Plex Alexa skill, head over to https://www.plex.tv/alexa and enjoy the future! » says Plex.
The company further says, «If you’re the proud owner of an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Amazon Tap, Amazon Fire TV, or Fire tablet, you’ll be able to dive right in. If you’re still on the fence as to whether to let Alexa into your life, let me share a few examples of how the new Plex skill can save you time, improve your marriage, and rescue you from up to dozens of mouse clicks every day! »
ALSO READ: NETGEAR Nighthawk X10 AD7200 802.11ad Smart WiFi router (R9000) supports Plex and Amazon Drive
The company shares a couple of faux comedic dialogues to highlight how Alexa might be used with its service. You can see one of them below.
While some folks will say this is just another way to make some people even lazier — and I do not disagree — it is still very useful nonetheless. After all, consuming media is all about relaxation and entertainment — voice controls makes this experience less strenuous. On a more serious note, this could come in very handy for those with certain disabilities too.
Are you a Plex user that plans to use Alexa? Tell me in the comments.

China billionaire-linked stocks plunge in Shanghai

0

NewsHubStocks linked to missing Chinese billionaire Xiao Jianhua tumbled Friday as investors ignored a statement saying business at his vast empire was “normal” following reports of his abduction by security agents.
Shanghai-listed companies controlled by Xiao’s Tomorrow Holding dropped by their daily limit on the first trading day after a week-long Chinese new year holiday.
Chemical company Baotou Tomorrow Technology Co. sank five percent — the maximum allowed for companies at risk of being delisted — while sugar-maker Baotou Huazi Industry and cement manufacturer Xishui Strong Year Co both plunged 10 percent.
Financier Xiao was last seen at his apartment in Hong Kong’s harbourfront Four Seasons hotel, according to reports in the city this week.
He was taken by mainland security agents last week, according to overseas Chinese-language media.
However, a statement late Thursday said «production and operations of Tomorrow Holding Ltd and its related companies are all normal”.
Xiao’s case has sparked new fears that freedoms in Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous city with a separate legal system from the mainland, are under threat from Beijing.
The South China Morning Post in Hong Kong said Xiao, the founder of Beijing-based Tomorrow Group, is in the mainland «assisting investigations» into the stock market turmoil of 2015.
His wife Zhou Hongwen is now running the business, the report said Friday.
Shanghai’s composite index collapsed almost 40 percent in just two months in the summer of 2015.
The plunge came after authorities helped inflate a bubble in the market by encouraging investment but when it burst, officials sought to pin blame on market manipulators.
It is unclear how Xiao is being linked to the crisis, but mainland investigators have targeted several investment executives on suspicion of insider trading since 2015.

SNAP! The company behind Snapchat files $3 billion IPO

0

NewsHubThere has been speculation for quite some time that Snap Inc. would plan to go public. Today, the company got the ball rolling by filing its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange with plans to raise $3 billion.
Although the company is most associated with Snapchat, an app that provides messaging, temporary image sharing, and more, Snap Inc. is clearly changing course as their websites states:
Currently, the company only has one product on the market, Spectacles. Unlike a traditional item that can be purchased online, Spectacles first made their debut via a traveling vending machine. While a majority of folks will need to follow the map in order to find out where the wearables might arrive next, those in New York have it a bit easier with a local Spectacles pop-up shop.

South Korea president's office block prosecutors' searches

0

NewsHubSouth Korean officials Friday turned away prosecutors trying to search the president’s mountainside compound, a confrontation that highlights the tensions of an investigation into a scandal that knocked President Park Geun-hye from power.
Prosecutors want to question Park and search her presidential Blue House for more information about events that led to her impeachment in December. Park has said she’s willing to be questioned. But her office opposes any search and maintains that a law blocks searches in areas with military and other official secrets.
On Friday, a team of prosecutors and investigators attempted to enter the Blue House in downtown Seoul after receiving a court-issued search warrant. But the Blue House didn’t let them in, saying it can only hand over documents to prosecutors, not give them entrance. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the president’s office produced the documents or whether ignoring the court’s search warrant was legal.
South Korean television stations showed what they called members of the special prosecutors’ team waiting inside cars at a parking lot within the Blue House compound.
Prosecution spokesman Lee Kyu-chul told reporters Thursday that his team wants to search Blue House sites suspected of being linked to the scandal. He said the offices of presidential advisers and security staff could be the target of the search, but didn’t say how prosecutors could get into the compound without Blue House cooperation.
The law cited by the Blue House prohibits searches on areas with state secrets without the approval from those in charge of those places. But the law still says that those in charge must approve searches unless they undermine national interests.
The Blue House used this law to reject a previous search attempt by prosecutors, but legal experts say its rejection must be strictly applied to searches of offices handling confidential information, not the whole compound.
State prosecutors tried to search the Blue House in October but ended up receiving Blue House documents outside the compound, before they handed those over to a team led by independent counsel Park Young-soo.
Park faces allegations that she let her confidante Choi Soon-sil manipulate government affairs and extort money from businesses, though Choi has never had any government post. Choi and several of Park’s presidential advisers have been arrested on related charges.
The Constitutional Court is holding a trial to decide whether to formally unseat Park or restore her power. If Park is forced out, South Korea would hold an election to choose her successor within two months of the move.

Nordstrom drops Ivanka Trump’s brand amid threats of boycott, citing declining sales

0

NewsHub#GrabYourWallet has claimed another victory.
The push by activists to boycott companies with business ties to President Donald Trump and his family had already succeeded in persuading Shoes.com to drop Trump shoes from its inventory, and Uber CEO Travis Kalanick to step down from Trump’s economic advisory forum. Now, department store chain Nordstrom has announced it will not carry first daughter Ivanka Trump’s fashion line in 2017.
News of the move first emerged Wednesday, as Bloomberg reported that Trump’s brand had been removed from Nordstrom’s master list of brands sold by the company and that the chain planned to phase out her products.
However, Business Insider later reported Thursday that all of Ivanka Trump’s products were gone from the company’s website, though several reappeared as of Thursday night. On Twitter, Nordstrom began responding to people questioning why the brand had vanished.
“Each year we cut about 10 percent (of brands) and refresh our assortment with about the same amount,” a Nordstrom spokesperson told Business Insider. “In this case, based on the brand’s performance we’ve decided not to buy it for this season.”
On social media, Nordstrom repeated the stance it voiced when activists slammed it for continuing to carry the brand: The decision was purely business, not a political statement one way or the other.
In November, as the Grab Your Wallet campaign blasted Nordstrom along with more than a dozen other companies for carrying Trump’s products, the company responded by saying on Twitter that “we recognize our customers can make choices about what they purchase based on personal views & we’ll continue to give them options.”
On Thursday, Nordstrom did not say whether the company’s executives believed the boycott had hurt sales, but on social media, Grab Your Wallet activists were quick to claim victory.
There are still several major retailers that sell Trump products, including Macy’s, Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, Jet, Marshalls, Lord and Taylor, Bloomingdale’s and others. The Grab Your Wallet campaign is aimed at boycotting pressuring these companies to drop all Trump-related merchandise, given the extreme wealth of the president and his family.
But Nordstrom and Ivanka Trump have had a particularly lengthy business relationship since 2011, when Trump was launching her first line of footwear, per Bloomberg. In a statement to CNN , a Trump spokesperson made reference to that relationship in response to Thursday’s news.
“The strong relationship between Nordstrom and the Ivanka Trump brand was instrumental in the evolution of the brand when it was one category and the brand has since expanded to multiple categories,” the spokesperson said.
