Ford, Toyota Form Consortium to Advance in-Vehicle Apps

0

NewsHubLAS VEGAS, Nevada , January 5, 2017 (ENS) – Ford and Toyota are forming a nonprofit organization to manage an open source software platform that will give consumers more options in how they connect and control their smartphone apps on the road. The two automakers announced the new SmartDeviceLink Consortium Tuesday at the first media day of the Consumer Electronics Show, or CES.
The consortium has attracted its first automaker members: Mazda, PSA Group, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. and Suzuki Motor Corporation.
Elektrobit, Luxoft, and Xevo joined as the first supplier members. Harman, Panasonic, Pioneer and QNX have signed Letters of Intent to join.
SmartDeviceLink is a standard set of protocols and messages that connect applications on a smartphone to a vehicle head unit. The core component is the software that automakers embed in their vehicle head units.
The open source SDL software allows smartphone app developers to seamlessly integrate their app functions with in-vehicle technology such as the vehicle display screen, steering wheel controls and voice recognition.
With this new level of integration, drivers can enjoy their favorite apps on the road in an enhanced, user-friendly way.
Livio, a Ford subsidiary, will manage the open source project and provide guidance to the SmartDeviceLink Consortium and its members.
SmartDeviceLink technology is based on Ford’s contribution of its AppLink™ software to the open source community in 2013. Ford AppLink software is currently available on more than five million vehicles globally.
Popular apps such as Pandora, Spotify, iHeartRadio, AccuWeather and others are available now to Ford AppLink users.
“Encouraging innovation is at the center of Ford’s decision to create SmartDeviceLink, and this consortium is a major step toward that goal,” said Doug VanDagens, global director, Ford Connected Vehicle and Services, and a board member of the consortium.
“Consumers will win with new, innovative app experiences from increased collaboration and developer engagement,” VanDagens said.
For instance, Toyota plans to commercialize a GPS vehicle tracking telematics system using SmartDeviceLink software around 2018.
Shigeki Tomoyama, president of Toyota’s Connected Company, said, “Connectivity between smartphones and the vehicle interface is one of the most important connected services. Using SmartDeviceLink, we can provide this service to our customers in a safe and secure manner. We are excited to collaborate with many auto manufacturers and suppliers who share our view.”
The open source platform gives automakers and suppliers a uniform standard for integrating apps. Developers can focus on creating the best experience for customers by integrating one linking solution for use by all participating automakers.
“We first set out to develop a way for Ford customers to access and control their favorite smartphone apps using voice commands,” said Don Butler, executive director, Ford Connected Vehicle and Services. “Now, seeing how our innovative software is serving new industry partners is very rewarding. We look forward to innovating together to keep pace with the needs and wants of consumers around the world.”
Industry-wide adoption of SmartDeviceLink is expected to give app developers a broad audience as their innovations could be applied to millions of vehicles worldwide.

A premonition, a dream: Church slaying victims remembered

0

NewsHubJanuary 5, 2017
CHARLESTON, S. C. — One by one, friends and family members walked up to the witness stand and testified about the nine black church members gunned down during a Bible study in Charleston on June 17, 2015. They described personalities, future plans and final conversations.
The testimony came during the sentencing phase of Dylann Roof’s death penalty trial. The same jury that convicted the 22-year-old white man of hate crimes and other charges will decide whether to sentence him to life in prison or death. Here are highlights from the testimony Wednesday and Thursday.
A PREMONITION AND A DREAM
Myra Thompson seemed to know something would happen to her. A month before the shootings, daughter Denise Quarles says her mother talked about being confident she’d raised her children with strong morals that would serve them after her death. She also made it clear what she wanted, and didn’t want, for her funeral: Use red nail polish and don’t let the funeral home dye her hair gray or cake-on the makeup.
On the night of the shooting, Quarles said she woke suddenly after a dream about watching her mother drown and hearing a voice saying her mother was gone. Quarles picked up her phone, checked Facebook and learned of the shooting — and her mother’s likely fate.
«I just feel like that was God who spoke to me,» she said. «That’s why I know where my mom is. She’s in heaven, with everybody else. She’s fine. »
‘DADDY’S DEAD?’
Jennifer Pinckney huddled under a desk with her 6-year-old daughter, her hand clasped over the girl’s mouth to keep her quiet, as Roof opened fire.
Not knowing for certain if the danger had passed, Pinckney dialed 911 and breathlessly told an operator she had heard shots inside the church.
«I think there’s been a shooting. I’m in the closet, under a desk,» Pinckney told the operator. «Please hurry. »
On the call, Pinckney tries to comfort her daughter Malana, who had been watching cartoons in her father’s office as he participated in Bible study.
«Daddy’s dead? » Malana says.
«No, baby, no,» the mother says. But at that moment, Pinckney said she knew her husband, church pastor Clementa Pinckney, had been killed.
A FUTURE IN THE CHURCH
The Rev. Anthony Thompson said his wife, Myra, was a dedicated person of faith who did her best to enjoy life.
Thompson cried as he described a conversation with his wife about their future plans to move and pursue studies and careers in the church.
«She was my world, and she was gone,» he said. «I’m just glad to know she’s somewhere… where somebody can take care of her better than I ever could. »
DEVOTED FRIEND
Sharonda Coleman-Singleton was a high school track coach. But the ministry was her calling. She was able to relate to a room full of people like they were talking one-on-one.
«She wanted to teach you,» said friend Rita Whidbee.
Coleman-Singleton’s daughter told jurors her mother would pray over her children before they went to sleep.
«Before I went to her with all my problems, and now I go to God,» Cam’Ryne Singleton said.
AN ANGEL
Bethane Middleton described her sister, Depayne Middleton-Doctor, 49, as a tender woman who took care of her. She had a beautiful voice.
«I consider her a borrowed angel,» Middleton said.
THE OPEN ROAD
Daniel «Dapper Dan» Simmons, 74, was so nicknamed for his shiny shoes and fine hats. His son, Dan Simmons Jr., said his father adored his grandchildren and spoke with them often, always willing to travel wherever was necessary to spend time with people he loved.
One of the first black drivers hired by Greyhound, Simmons loved to drive, up until the day of his death, his son said.
«He just loved everything about life,» Simmons said.
OTHER VICTIMS
Cynthia Hurd, 54, was a librarian. Ethel Lance, 70, was the church sexton who kept the bathrooms and building immaculately clean.
Susie Jackson, 87, sang in the church choir and Tywanza Sanders, 26, was Jackson’s nephew and an aspiring poet.

Mexico gas price protests, looting leave 2 dead, 600 arrested

0

NewsHubMEXICO CITY — Anger over gasoline price hikes in Mexico fueled more protests and looting Thursday, and officials said the unrest had resulted in the death of a policeman and a bystander, the ransacking of 300 stores and arrests of over 600 people.
The country’s business chambers said the combination of highway, port and terminal blockades and looting this week forced many stores and businesses to close and threatened supplies of basic goods and fuel.
Mexicans were enraged by the 20 percent fuel price hike announced over the weekend as part of a government deregulation of the energy sector. Protesters began blocking highways and gas stations, and some people have broken into stores to carry off merchandise.
Authorities said one policeman was run over and killed and another was seriously injured when they tried to stop robberies at a gas station in Mexico City. Police in the capital said they had arrested 76 people for looting about 29 stores.
In the Gulf coast state of Veracruz, a pickup truck trying to flee police during a store looting ran over a pedestrian, killing him, officials said.
Veracruz Gov. Miguel Angel Yunes Linares ventured out Thursday and tried to persuade a crowd not to attack a grocery store that had already been looted a day earlier. He offered the crowd coupons for $23.25 if they would desist from looting.
In Mexico State, which borders Mexico City, 430 people had been detained as suspected looters. Four state police officers were fired and detained after they were caught on video taking some looted items and putting them in their patrol vehicles.
With blockades affecting gas distribution terminals to gas stations, the Communications and Transport Department announced it would cancel permits for truckers who block roads.
Truck and taxi drivers have been among the most affected by the fuel price increases, which took effect as the government ends regulated prices for gasoline and diesel, which it says represented subsidies that unduly benefited wealthier Mexicans.
The change boosted the average price for a liter of premium gasoline to about 90 cents. That makes 4 liters, or about a gallon, equal to nearly as much as Mexico’s just raised minimum wage for a day’s work – about $4.
President Enrique Pena Nieto said Wednesday that he would try to help groups hit hard by the increases.
“I understand the anger and irritation felt by the general public” over the price increases, Pena Nieto said. But, he added, “If this decision had not been taken, the effects and consequences would have been far more painful.”

53 of 158 inmates accounted for after North Cotabato jailbreak

0

NewsHubMANILA, Philippines — More than 50 of the 158 inmates who escaped in the biggest jailbreak ever in the Philippines have been caught or killed, officials said Friday, with a manhunt underway for the others.
Of the prisoners who escaped after suspected heavily armed Muslim rebels stormed a jail in the country’s south, 43 have been recaptured and eight were killed.
Two others are being treated in hospital for injuries, said Maria Joyce Birrey, the Cotabato provincial police spokeswoman. As well, a jail guard died in the attack on the jail and a village official who allegedly drew a gun when encountered by police was killed.
The breakout from the jail in Kidapawan took place before dawn Wednesday when more than 100 gunmen attacked the facility. Kidapawan city is about 930 kilometers (580 miles) southeast of the capital, Manila, in a restive region where Muslim rebels have been active for generations.
Acting Provincial Jail Warden Superintedent Peter John Bongngat Jr. earlier said the attackers were thought to have included members of the outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and guerrillas who broke away from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the main Muslim separatist group in the predominantly Roman Catholic Philippines that has signed a peace deal with the government.
The two groups have denied involvement.
The jail held 1,511 inmates, including rebels facing murder charges for a series of bombings in the province, officials said. It was the third attack on the provincial jail facility since 2007. /rga

FBI Claims DNC ‘Inhibited’ Its Investigation Of Stolen Emails

0

NewsHubThe Democratic National Committee “inhibited” the FBI’s investigation of email hacks by refusing to grant investigators access to the party’s computer servers, the bureau is claiming.
“The FBI repeatedly stressed to DNC officials the necessity of obtaining direct access to servers and data, only to be rebuffed until well after the initial compromise had been mitigated,” an FBI official said Thursday, according to BuzzFeed News.
“This left the FBI no choice but to rely upon a third party for information. These actions caused significant delays and inhibited the FBI from addressing the intrusion earlier.”
The FBI’s response comes a day after a DNC official told BuzzFeed that the FBI has not inspected the party’s computer servers at any point in its months-long hacking probe.
Instead, the bureau relied on analysis conducted by CrowdStrike, a cyber security firm hired by the DNC which determined in June that the Russian government is behind the cyber attacks.
“The DNC had several meetings with representatives of the FBI’s Cyber Division and its Washington (DC) Field Office, the Department of Justice’s National Security Division, and U. S. Attorney’s Offices, and it responded to a variety of requests for cooperation, but the FBI never requested access to the DNC’s computer servers ,” DNC deputy communications director Eric Walker told BuzzFeed.
The FBI did not provide comment for that initial report, leaving the appearance that investigators failed to conduct a thorough and exhaustive investigation of the hacking.
In July, WikiLeaks released nearly 20,000 emails stolen from several top DNC officials. The publication led to the forced resignation of several of those officials as well as of chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The White House and various federal agencies, including the FBI, have asserted that Russia’s spy agencies were behind the cyber attack against the DNC as well as one against the Hillary Clinton campaign.
A report laying out the intelligence community’s conclusions has been given to President Obama. A declassified version will be released next week.

Guy Philippe, Haiti's former rebel leader, arrested after radio show

0

NewsHubA former Haitian rebel leader turned politician has been arrested after taking part in a radio show.
Guy Philippe, a former soldier, was the rebel leader of the 2004 Haitian rebellion, and was recently elected a Senator.
He was appearing on a radio programme in the capital, Port au Prince, before being arrested outside the studio.
He is wanted by the United States on drug charges, but it is not yet clear if that was why he was arrested.
Mr Philippe was elected as Senator for the Grand’Anse district in the November elections, but has yet to take his seat.
Local media outlets reported that he was arrested during a live radio broadcast, which the host interrupted once police arrived.
The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) lists Mr Philippe as a wanted man on charges of conspiracy to import cocaine and money laundering, but has yet to make any comment on the arrest in Haiti.
Associated Press reported that Mr Philippe has spent much of his time in recent years in a secluded mountainous part of southern Haiti.
In an interview with the New York Times last October , Mr Philippe spoke from his destroyed hometown in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, which battered the country’s south.
At the time, he accused the government of deliberately not providing aid to the area. «They are punishing the people because of me,» he told the Times.
The implication that he is linked to the drugs trade goes back to his time in exile in the Dominican Republic before the 2004 rebellion.
Mr Philippe was accused of involvement in drugs trafficking due to his reported use of expensive luxury hotels — a charge he vehemently denied.
«You can look in all the banks of the world, but you will not find any money of mine, because I am not rich,» he told reporters at the time .

Raiders trudge forward into playoffs

0

NewsHubYou’re a Raiders fan, and you wonder what else can happen. The team finally gets out of its decade-deep hole, one that’s silver as much as black, and the owner wants to sneak it over the border.
It has a quarterback worthy of the chant, “MVP, MVP,” and not only does he get hurt, a broken leg no less, but so does his backup.
So you wait, tentatively, philosophically, perhaps angrily, cursing fate, hoping the unproven kid at QB, Connor Cook, can make history and more importantly the defense, which was awful against Denver in the final regular season game, can make a few tackles.
Finally, after years and years — and years — the playoffs. The colleges around here are done. The other pro team, the 49ers, has been done since it started. In effect, the Raiders — “tha Raidahs” — are the only football team going in the entire great state of California. Whether they’re eventually also going to Vegas is the subject for another day.
Cook, as you know, is the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era, or since 1967, to make his first career start in a postseason game. He’s a rookie, selected in the fourth round of last spring’s draft with only a teaspoonful of experience.
He isn’t yet Ben Roethlisberger. Or Tom Brady. Or Derek Carr. Never may be. But a good quarterback is a leader as much as a passer, someone who inspires confidence and doesn’t panic.
As a sophomore, Cook helped win a Rose Bowl Game for Michigan State over Stanford on New Year’s Day 2014 and was named MVP, throwing for 332 yards. Two seasons later, the Spartans made it to the College Football Playoffs and lost in the semis to Alabama, 38-0. Cook was only 19 of 39, was sacked four times and threw two interceptions.
But only one pro game, last weekend, and that as an emergency backup. “I thought the poise was there,” Del Rio insisted. “The moment didn’t look too big for him.”
This moment, this first postseason game for the Raiders since January 2003, Super Bowl XXXVII, seems too big for the Raiders, what with a guy off the bench as the man in charge.
The usual company line is that it’s about teams, not necessarily individuals, even though we are aware a team is composed of individuals.
“Look,” said Del Rio, “it’s about our team going against their team. At the end of the day you can talk about one position over another and totally understand that quarterbacks get a lot of attention. But it will be the Oakland Raiders against the Houston Texans. We’ll be excited to see how the game goes.”
So will Raider fans. They’re properly distressed Carr or even Matt McGloin won’t be at center. They’re worried about what happened to the defense. And please don’t even bring up Las Vegas, even as an entertainment site.
“We just need to go out and play,” was Del Rio’s comment.
They’ll play, but how well?

New York Giants' Odell Beckham Jr. poses as Lyft driver

0

NewsHubNEW YORK, Jan. 5 (UPI) — One of the world’s most recognizable athletes needed just a ski cap and shades to fool Lyft passengers recently.
New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. kept his bleached out hairstyle under wraps this week when he pretended to be a Lyft driver.
Other athletes including: Jerry Rice , Shaquille O’Neal , Rob Gronkowski , and David Ortiz have also tried to trick passengers with the stunt.
On Beckham’s run, he repeatedly dropped hints about his alter ego before finally revealing his true identity to the Giants fans.
Beckham introduced himself as «JR,» telling passengers he has driven for the service for three years in New York.
He then asks the passengers which players they like on the Giants.
«I don’t got too much bad to say about, what’s his name? Beckham Jr.,» Beckham said. «I don’t know how I feel about him always dancing all of the time. »
He even asks passengers if they have ever been to Houston, where the Super Bowl will be played next month.
«I’m trying to get there in February,» Beckham said.
Beckham finished the prank off by giving the fans selfies and autographed footballs.
The three-time Pro Bowl selection had 1,367 yards and 10 touchdowns on 101 receptions this season.
The Giants battle the Green Bay Packers at 4:40 p.m. Sunday in an NFC Wild Card round showdown at Lambeau Field.

NFL notebook: Miami must do more with Moore

0

NewsHubDAVIE, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins dispensed with any pretense of suspense regarding their quarterback situation.
Ryan Tannehill was ruled out of Sunday’s playoff game at Pittsburgh, and backup Matt Moore will start for the fourth straight week. The Dolphins announced the decision Thursday after determining Tannehill still isn’t ready to practice because of a sprained left knee.
AFC

Sunday
NFC
Saturday
Sunday
“It felt like it was the right thing to do,” Coach Adam Gase said, “just so we can move on in this week and not play, ‘What are we going to do?’ and focus on what we’re doing right now with Matt.”
Moore, a 10th-year pro, is 2-1 as Tannehill’s replacement and will make his first career postseason start.
“He knows he’s our relief pitcher,” offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said. “We try to make the decision early in the week because it’s hard to get two guys prepared. He assumed he was doing it. He has continued to prepare as a starter.”
If the Dolphins win Sunday, Tannehill could return for their second-round game Jan. 14 at New England.
Such a scenario is the reason Miami hasn’t put him on injured reserve.
Gase said he believes Tannehill is close to returning to practice.
“We’ve got to keep talking to him, and he needs to keep letting us know where he’s at and how he feels,” Gase said. “We try to do different drills with him and just try to figure out what he can articulate to us.”
The Dolphins are 2-1 with Moore starting. He has eight touchdown passes, three interceptions and a quarterback rating of 105.6, which is higher than Tannehill’s career-best 93.5 this year.
“He’s been in the league for more time than Tannehill so he’s got more experience,” Steelers cornerback Ross Cockrell said. “For us on the back end, whether it’s Matt Moore, whether it’s Tannehill, it doesn’t make a difference for our preparation. Our job is still to stop the run, create turnovers and put pressure on the quarterback.”
The general manager is up to the task, but he knows winning the AFC East won’t be easy. Not with Tom Brady still going strong at 39 for the New England Patriots.
“In my phone, I think I have Tom’s birthday logged in there,” Maccagnan said Thursday. “So every time his birthday comes up, I know he’s getting one year older.
“I’m just joking.”
But New England has won eight straight AFC East titles and 14 of the last 15. Brady said last season that he wants to play 10 more years, so that’s bad news for Maccagnan and the Jets.
“I have to find a new voodoo doll, I guess,” Maccagnan said, smiling.
The Jets struggled to a 5-11 season that put both Maccagnan and Coach Todd Bowles on the hot seat. They were within a win of the playoffs last year before falling short. One way to the postseason and ending a six-season drought would be knocking off Brady’s bunch.
“It’s not unattainable,” Maccagnan insisted, but the gap between New York and New England seems a lot larger than ever before.
“You can’t sit there and look how high the climb is,” Maccagnan said. “You just have to keep focusing on trying to make decisions that you feel will keep moving the team to the vision of where you want it. Unfortunately it just takes time.”
The team owner is preaching patience, though, and to trust in the process.
“I understand their anger,” Johnson said Thursday. “You’ve just got to be confident in what we’re trying to do.”
That would be sustained winning and making the postseason, something the Jets haven’t done in six years.
It’s the longest drought in Johnson’s tenure since he took over the team in 2000, and the worst for the franchise since the 1992-97 seasons.
“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion,” Zenner said. “It sounded like he said some pretty nice stuff, so I’m appreciative of that.”
The undrafted, second-year pro from South Dakota State has emerged as a No. 1 running back for the Lions entering their NFC wild-card game Saturday night on the road against the Seahawks.
“There’s not many white running backs in the NFL but he has to be the best right now,” said Bennett, a standout defensive end for Seattle. “He’s doing such a great job of cutbacks and hitting the hole. He’s a really good back.”
It’s the third time this season Gregory has been suspended. The first was a four-game ban, followed by 10 games on top of that. The latest suspension makes him ineligible for the playoffs that start Jan. 15 for Dallas, the top seed in the NFC.
The suspension is for one calendar year, meaning he could be eligible for the playoffs without another violation if the Cowboys make it again next season.
Barry spent the past two seasons as the Washington defensive coordinator, and it ranked 28th in the NFL in each of them.
